Using a cast iron trivet as a cooking utensil

I've just watched another video ( I really need to get a life :) ). The guy uses a trivet over a gas burner to cook various things such as pizza and bread based creations. He maintains that it is faster and better than using a conventional skillet. I'm not confident that it is a good idea. What do you more experienced cooks thing of this approach to cooking?
 
What did the trivet look like? To me a trivet is something to stand a hot pot on and usually vented, or sort of rails! Not sure this sort of driver would be that useful for many uses.
 
It was round, and just what you imagine a trivet would look like - Cast iron with perforations to aid heat dissipation.

Historical note - The word trivet comes from the Latin word triped, meaning three feet. The word trevet was used in middle English to refer to a pot stand, or tripod. This is my opinion, many others have different ideas.
 
I am not convinced about using it to cook on though. For me, living in my van, everything has to have more than one use. A good skillet or thick based frying pan will multi task better than a trivet.
