Has anyone any experience of up plating a Tag axel 5000kg motorhome to 5500kgs and what changes if any are needed.

I’ve tried to contact SV Tech and Van Weight Engineering yesterday with no success as yet.

It’s something i’ve absolutely no experience of up to now.

cheers

Al

VWE wont be available til about February.

It will depend what your chassis is available to take.

Add up the front and rear axles and you should be able to up plate to the sum of those 2 (obviously not loading either axle above that amount)

Anything above that will need some form of adjustment (and your tyres have to be capable of the load)

SV Tech is usually an online form, complete it and they get back to you..
As said above, seem's some issue with VWE and not able to issue certification at the moment. :(

I did our tandem axled Hymer in 2 x stages Al, ie, stage one through VOSA (now DVSA), after having uprated Goldschmitt coil springs fitted to the front. I presented the paperwork, including an engineers report along with the EU design certificate. That cost me £13.00 at the time with VOSA.
SVTech didn't want to know, hence me doing it myself. That took me from 4500Kgs to 5000Kgs.
Stage two was done on the rear axles as a paper exercise, through the late John Ruffles (RIP), which was around the £150 mark. That gave me another 500Kgs, taking me up to 5500Kgs, and also up rating my GTW to 6500Kgs. SVTech wanted £330 + VAT for the same paperwork exercise on the rear axles. :(

Alko had fitted axles plated to 1750Kgs, but Hymer only rated them at 1500Kgs, hence the spare to play with, and without any upgrades required.

Good luck with it. 👍

Jock. :)

I’ve actually had the front springs uprated when it was brand new for longer Comfort springs at SAP Doncaster so not sure if they’re what’s needed

i’m really interested in doing the rear though if it’s doable diy

There is a company on eBay that does single alko kits but still expensive and they don’t show much details about fitting so you would be in the dark a bit, not sure on tag kits

Drop Dee an email,

He at VWE offer a superb service, and his advice and experience is way in excess of us lesser mortals.

Shame he’s don’t approved by dvla at present

Al, I have amended my post to insert VOSA (now DVSA), rather than DVLA.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Dosent mention that on his website? He did me a great job earlier in the year.
Do a search on here, funster had a letter rejecting an application, VWE are revoked

Dee, the owner of VWE, has made it known through another Funster, via an email which was copied and pasted, that he is currently awaiting re-evaluation by the powers that be, and it should be business as normal upon completion. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Seems strange that the person who sanctioned him at DVLA left then he got revoked and audited, makes you wonder 🤔

We had our 5000Kg Dethleffs tag uprated to 5300Kg as a paper exercise through SV Tech with no mechanical changes. The uprate changed only the rear axle ratings.

SV Tech were brilliant when I upweighted. 3500 to 4500 but not Tag axle. Their online form is very straightforward to complete and they call you to clarify anything not clear. Great service..

SV we’re not so good when they weighed us at Newark show some years back and told us we were over weight !
When in reality the scales they used were not used correctly.
I did email them but neve did get a satisfactory reply.

hi Dave

in def interested how you did this mate and what system you used, costs and time taken

Is it an easy job mate?
The system I used was from MAD suspension you will need to select the kit you want to suit your alko chassis.

I did the job back in 2015 in my factory so had all tools etc to hand and indoors.
