Understanding Millenials - the Snowflake generation

I saw this a few weeks back and he pretty much nails it.

There was a Scottish comedian (he apparently voices over Love Island) on TV this past Saturday who explained that at school he got an attendance certificate for 80% attendance whereas in the real work world you would have been sacked before you dropped anywhere near 80%.

Well said, but it gives them a excuse for being a failure. If their parents were to blame, who was teaching them, why did they fail in their responsibilities?

Never heard of him but I think this should be listened to by everyone. Trouble is, at 16 minutes long, he will probably lose most of his intended audience because of their need for instantaneous reward.

Brilliant and ironic, use facebook to show how bad it is. Therefore if "they" read it they are once more locked into the addiction.

The other problem with it, it assumes "the corporations" are hiring these kids whereas the corporations prefer to buy robots, pay cheap Chinese kids and leave the their kids on the streets.

Hey, there's nothing to quite beat stereotyping an entire generation, is there? I'm sure many on this forum just love the stereotyping of old people. ;)

Of course there's bad examples of practices out there, and a certificate for 80% school attendance is pathetic, but don't presume that is typical or universal. My 2 eldest kids go to an ordinary state comprehensive and they have an attendance scheme - 100% for a whole year and you get a 100% badge for your blazer. Is that really a bad thing? I don't think so.

Excellent interpretation of the snowflakes, just watched it with my wife who was a secondary teacher. She reeled off a list of former pupils to whom everything applied, raised to fail by their parents.

Confirms many posts on here in recent weeks with millenials blaming the baby boomers for damaging their futures , of baby boomers having rose coloured spectacles. We don’t have rose coloured spectacles, it really was good in our time, it’s just many of the young of today expect everything today that we old uns took a lifetime to get.
A spot on speech.

It really is a case of 'blame the parents' .

I have said many times, that TV is to blame for the downfall of modern society, and it is not 'Art imitating Life', it is the other way round. And parents allowing kids to watch drivel on a daily basis doesn't help at all.

My kids didn't get to watch rubbish on TV, they were allowed kids TV, but soaps were banned , (in the house totally) ,so they didn't get brought up on a diet of Eastenders characters screaming at each other, day and night, and all the other garbage that passes for entertainment.

Also , when we played , we played to win, no free passes so jimmy could win, he had to balance his need to play snooker , or table football, with the knowledge he was going to get thrashed , which he did, and as long as that was the case , I was happy to oblige. I wasn't about me winning, it was about him accepting that to win you have to want it , and give more than everyone else. As a result, he didn't much play team sports , because the notion of getting a trophy for turning up was not in his , or my make up..and he didn't like giving his all, for someone to dick about. So when he finally beat me at stuff , I shook his hand and he knew that he had worked for it , and I knew I hadn't given it to him.

Now you have an army of Yoghurt Knitters who raise feral kids who cant be told off in case it upsets them, and on the flip side you have your what is probably 3rd generation scummers who have no respect for the law at all, because they were raised not to.

Mobile phones and tablets and social networks have a lot to answer for?
Every day you can see someone walking along paying no attention to what’s going on around them but watching their phones with a trance like look.

Simon Sinek is excellent, seen him several times now and even used him for an event we organised, he was the guest speaker. Very smart guy indeed.

What a pleasant change to see a common sense video on Facebook.
He's an inspirational guy. (y)
It might run for 16 minutes @GJH but it's certainly worth finding the time to watch.

Richard.

Well worth making time for it.

As I said, I simply don't have the time at the moment. I have far more pressing matters to attend to.

@Viennese: Just watched it, Catherine, and it's given me an insight into my niece's behaviour. I really can't stand the photographing meals - she's 34 for heaven's sake!! - and constant phone checking. Hope you enjoyed your France trip.

Thanks @Audrey - yes we had a good time in France. Hope to meet up with you soon and catch up!!

Not watched the video but is the "snowflake generation" somehow different to the older generations on here who were queuing up to exclaim how appalled and offended they were by a crass bonfire effigy video ?
There appears to be a lot of double standards at play.

Thanks for posting @Viennese. I hadn't heard of him before. It certainly made me think about my generations parenting. I think we reacted to the strict upbringing we had, and adopted a more laissez faire approach. It seems we have let our children down. I wouldn't describe my children as snowflakes but they and their generation are less self confident than I was. They also work hard, and show concern for the world around them.

If you refer to Guy Fawkes , we didn’t complain we celebrated.:) and yes snowflakes are different , they have much provided by the baby boomers who started with nothing.
