Having never bought a new vehicle let alone a new camping car i wonder what the typical discount levels are from list price for a factory order (not a stock vehicle) ?

I've bought many "ex-demo" type vehicles and always got what i thought was a good deal but fear that the % discount on new campers may be low ???

Also can anyone advise on typical lead times for factory orders ?, in this case Bürstner.

I know both are rather vague questions and there's probably a range of answers but just trying to get some guidance.

Thanks

Discount 15% from German & Belgium dealers UK dealers not a lot. Delivery LHD 4 months, RHD 6 months plus.
Often get a better deal at a show particularly Caravan Salon.

Many will say if you want a Burstner then buy it in Belgium or Germany and it will be much cheaper but a left hooker which is great if you aim to use it in Europe a lot.

Buying abroad you will instantly save the. £2000 UK delivery charge and it will cost you less than £500 to import and get on the road.

OK that's a good guide. I'm wary of an import due to warranty and residual value so would likely be a local purchase. Also good to know about the lead times, was quoted a spurious 7 months today "so you better order this week" kinda thing...

Don’t caravan/motorhome manufacturing batch up orders to make all one type in one hit. So I guess they give you the worst it can be knowing you’re be well happy if you get it early.

Yep that's why RHD are on long delivery they hardly make any, one or two batches a year.

I'm wary of UK dealers that is why I've never bought from one. Warranty I could get done in UK but prefer to pop back over to Belgium where I know it will get done properly.
From personal experience residual value better with LHD as you can sell or trade in any country and foreign dealers work on lower margins so trade ins are far higher.

So buying new abroad is a win win scenario!

You can order a rhd from abroad.
Sone uk dealers will get quicker delivery than others.
Why not buy nearly new?

A question I've always wanted to ask. Been driving for 50 years now but never bought a car from a dealer apart from present one bought 3 months ago. Sadly i'm naïve with dealers and always feel i'm likely to be ripped off. Went to a dealer last week to discuss buying a new motorhome costing 73k , salesman phoned back offering me a trade deal on my Knaus. The offer was 10k below the minimum i'd accept and expect to get privately. He said he'd ring back and try and get more but I felt he wanted me to quickly hand the money over. Never phoned back. How do others manage these situations?

May be try another dealer. If that dealer already has it’s amount of your type of van in stock it might not want any more. Could be a whole lot of reasons none personally to you. Have a punt around.

Don't need to Belgium and German dealers normally give you their best price straight away so no haggling and excellent trade in prices. I got more as a trade in than I could have sold the last van for and a big discount off the new one.

Edit:
You do need a LHD to trade.

I can only give you my experience ... ordered Feb for June delivery. Build was mid September. Still awaiting notification of shipment. Realistically will be December.

If I had my time again I’d buy off the forecourt.

Our discount on a factory order was just over 4.5% plus some freebies. Another dealer who had the van in stock just offered reduced price of extras. The third dealer within a 4 hour drive forgot to get back to us,

Hope that is some use.

Taking the pee me thinks I wouldn't be interested with less than 15% discount.

The ONLY thing I would question Lenny is the warranty bit ... it's not that easy as I've found with a UK bought one as many dealers do NOT want to sort out my faulty fridge unless I bought the camper from them, it took Thetford getting involved to find one that would do it who's nearly an hours drive away. Have you ever tried to get warranty work done in the UK on one of your foreign bought MHs?

Offered 8% off a Dethleff at the NEC.
The surprising thing was the trade in.
I expect a private sale would raise £35,000
they offered me £33,000.
Went to Brownhills 2 weeks ago very little discount just free servicing and paint treatmeant and some other bullshit, and £28,000 trade in.
It sure pays to shop around.
Looked at buying a Dethleff in Europe but felt a £5,000 saving was not worth it when you take travel costs, registration cost out ect.

Last van I had several problems sorted by local Hymer dealer, this one I had one thing sorted but prefer to take it back to Belgium anyway. Most German manufacturers offer a pan European warranty you just need to shout loud and complained to the manufacturer if they don't play ball. Normally you always get better service taking it back to the dealer you bought from. Small price to pay for the saving. As I've said before with the much higher trade in our overall saving on this van was £25k pays for a lot of trips to Belgium.

I ordered a new LHD Dethleffs from Germany after the Dusseldorf caravan salon. Cost was 12000 euros better than I could get in the U.K. No trade in involved.

Delivery not till April but that was my choice, one dealer offered a January delivery.

Hope that helps

Great feedback.

For me LHD is of course obligatory, but whether to order from a local dealer or in say Germany (RC Reisemobil Centre is about 4hrs away) is another question. Warranty is my main concern although i could drive back up to them if really required, i guess I've been spoilt though as the largest Caravan and Motorhome dealer in Switzerland is literally 10mins from our house.

Importing the vehicle is another headache, like all things possible but it is quite a process here ie it's purposely set up to make you think twice about doing it in the first place but people do it all the time so it can't be that hard, hey ;)

TBH if i did go down the import route then i'd likely go "pre-loved" as the van i'd like (Bürstner Argos 747-2-G) is like rocking horse doo da here and they practically don't come up where as in Germany there's usually around 20 available at any one time.

More homework me thinks.....

Don't get target fixation on a discount off the list price. You may well be better off "paying" a little more, but getting more off in the way of awning, TV, satnav, reversing camera, solar panels, bike racks, bbq points, etc.., from the dealer.

All the same % or $ = the same thing to me. Happy to get the options for free and the van at full tarif :D

Foreign dealers always give you the discount of the options as well.
