Well as the title may suggest I have been toying with the possibility of using a 12v (or battery operated) projector and screen instead of a TV. They are much lighter, require less power and although useless for TV programmes can be used to play stuff on SD/USB devices. Some even allow sticks in the HDMI sockets so a major possibility to have Netflix, Now TV and Amazon Prime on the box too. Is anyone else here doing this? Any pitfalls to this? Would it be worth considering to cut down on weight and power consumption?
Thanks for any help/answers.

I‘ve got one in a cupboard somewhere, too much hassle setting up speakers etc so I returned to using a TV very quickly.

i have a business retailing and installation of home cinema equipment/rooms in residential homes, i've also toyed with the idea of a projector in the motorhome and outside when its nice to do so.

with that in mind my contact at Epson UK brought me a small very portable and lightweight projector to evaluate, my first impressions were that its perfect for the motorhome, also it has space behind the speaker rear cover to mount a 4k firestick so all my streaming services were taken care of

take a look here if its something you may be interested in

I have been thinking about this as well, but for £1,000 I'll put it on hold for now, at least till I have seen it working, appreciate it will work well when dark, but would like something we can use in light conditions as well, which will probably require a high powered projector.

£££ OUCH !

To the OP -

TV approx 3 or 4kg
Monitor etc approx 2kg +

So weight appears not to be a big saving ?

Just looked at the specs, 240v only and 172w, so only realistically for use whilst on hook up.

Until the dealer can get the motorhome we want to the weighbridge and give me an accurate weight every Kg saved could make all the difference. Have not got a C1 license and without a knee replacement will be unlikely to have anything over 3500Kg so for now weight has to be a major consideration, especially with 4 dogs (standard Dachshunds), dog cage, generator and possibly an external privacy room too. (Yep I want it all but without the weight, insert manic crazy laughter here). Going on the figures you suggest I could get 1/2 a dog extra in the van.

You could probably save more weight by reducing the amount of fuel in the tank and filling more frequently.

Never considered that, but what a good idea! Had already worked out keeping water to a minimum as we will only be away about 3 nights at a time, but never thought about the fuel side of saving weight. So glad i joined this forum and came across people who know how to think outside of the box. Being new to all this all ideas and help are really appreciated :)

Sweeteners instead of a 2kg bag of sugar, packets as opposed to tins or loose food in plastic containers or even better food bags will save small amounts of weight.

think? outside of the box.
Most Funsters just get out of their box! :whistle2: :imoutahere:
Ask away with the questions you'll always get great support on here.(y)

ps if you give advanced notification of your trips you'll always get a Funster tagging along with the hope they'll get the other half a tank of fuel you'll not be putting in! For free, obviously.

pps you might also want to think about the gas you carry. Standard Calor \ Flo-gas (steel) cylinders a pretty heavy. Calor discontinued their Lite cylinders a while back but you can get refillable Safefill cylinders in various sizes and they're lighter than the steel ones. Initial purchase price isn't that cheap though.

Although it's not 12v I bought one of these in Spain and a 40" screen and have to say it works very well for us:

Amazon product ASIN B07VN52BYF
I also bought a 100" screen (basically a sheet) to use in the awning when the Euro championship was going to be played , oh well there's always next year. The sound is decent enough not to need the use of our soundbar and it works with the firestick/media player/satellite dish/tablet. Swmbo can read subtitles now unlike on the 16" telly!

For lots of reasons, weight being just one, I'd certainly dump the genny. You should survive on batteries for 3 days.

Hadn’t thought about a projector until tonight’s posts ?
That one is cheaper in Spain than the UK: Mini Projector, GooDee 5500 Lumens Portable HD G500
But you’d have to be heading to Spain to make the price difference an issue.

Sorry. I couldn’t get the UK amazon link to copy over embedded above: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07VDJC3MW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Z0oJEbW4JZS6W

Firstly, its too noisy for using in a motorhome, secondly Ive found projectors with android built in are not usually updated as android moves on, this means that as time goes by and apps are updated they dont work. Finally, there are good branded LED projectors in the £300 to £500 price band that will do the job and are smaller, lighter and silent.
Optoma and Philips have a number of acceptable projectors for van use.

Yep it looks the same apart from the colour. For the money I paid I wasn't expecting too much but I've no complaints, there is some noise from the fan but I don't notice it after a couple of minutes.
