Lots now
We are in the lucky position that my brother in law has paid for a villa in Daylam Türkiye for 2 weeks (it looks lovely). We are planning to travel into Europe and possibly go via Italy to Greece for a few weeks (we dont need to be back in the uk till early june).

Here's the question do we park up the motorhome in storage/campsite in greece and fly to the villa or do we travel in the motorhome to Turkey and what could be the issues or pitfalls in this plan. Of the course the advantages are it's beneficial to our 90 in 180 stay time as turkeys out of the eu.

You’ve got the ideal vehicle, if you have the spare time and money, drive, drive, drive!! There’s so much to see in turkey (yes I watch you tube a lot) Van, Batman and mount Arrarat in the far east of Turkiye are on my bucket list when I retire👍👍

Have a great trip whichever you choose👍👍

Since 1980s
Spent 3 months in Turkey this year (March - June) beautiful country and lovely people
Great roads everywhere we travelled right down to the Syria border then east to Van and the Iran border the North for the Black Sea coasts and it was all amazing so many beautiful places....
Istanbul was "interesting" driving through in a 9 metre motorhome with an extra metre of bicycle rack on the back but it's all good 🙂 in the last pic you can see Cyprus on the horizon 👍

I think that you would have to fly into Dalaman for Dalyan and the only way of getting there from Greece flying would be via Istanbul, I may be wrong though as not checked recently.

RU sure it's Cyprus? It's between 45-50 miles away and maximum altitude about 1000M. Rhodes or Kos I could believe.

We own a villa in Dalyan (Mugla) is this where you are going?
We have driven over to our villa at least 6 times, all our trips have been via France, Mont Blanc Tunnel into Italy, ferry from Ancona into Igoumenitsa (Greece) drive across Northern Greece into Turkey at Ipsala.
Then down the western side of Turkey, Cannakale (Battle of Gallipoli) down through Izmir, to Dalyan.

This year ( March) now we have a motorhome we are thinking of going overland through Europe. Previously we had a Folding Camper so were restricted to campsites and having discovered a route etc we just stayed with it.

Only issues I can readily think of is, insurance ( you will need a Green Card for Turkey) insurance you buy at the border is third party only.
My car recovery was only valid in the European side of Turkey, did not cover the area, basically south of Istanbul.

Turkey is a wonderful country, the people are very friendly and welcoming.

It is a vast country.

Turkish coast to the tops of the mountains is a tad over 70 miles. Your horizon at sea(beach level) is only about 5-6 miles. Clearly the camera never lies but I'm surprised that mountain peaks of 1000M are visible at that distance. I'd have thought they would barely have peeked above the horizon.

I've no idea but the guy at the campsite assured us it was definitely Cyprus, here's an article I just found on Reddit, of the opposite view (Cyprus to Turkey) it looks really close here 🙂

We have left our van at a campsite on Lefkada before for a couple of weeks whilst we went sailing and they charged us 4 euros a day….came back and they had washed it for us the day before.

However, if you have the time and inclination I would drive and spend some time in Turkey….a fabulous country where we met nothing but kindness. Be prepared in more remote places for long fuel stops as you will rarely get away without having tea and meeting a few of the family!

To give you an idea of the hospitality we had an issue with the van - we went to a Mercedes dealership who refused to take anything for fixing our exhaust pipe (£200 I reckon) as we were guests in their country.

Enjoy.

Google Earth is good for this. It's a bit of a fiddle to use, but if you draw a circle from where the pic was taken, and set the altitude to 30m above ground level, it will show you what can be seen from a flat eye-line at this point. If you set the radius to 70 miles you'll see that it intersects the mountains in Northern Cyprus (on the Greek side) at about 720m. There's not much at or above 720m (a dozen peaks over about 20 degrees), but you could also see a lot below the flat eyeline. Finding this is lot trickier, though. You'd have to draw a circle at a half-way point in the sea at a sea level of zero, and find where it hits the Cypriot coast.

Actually, probably a lot easier just to run up a flight sim and park on the road in Turkey. That would give you a good view.

Trying to work, but got bored... this is what Microsoft's flight sim thinks you can see from just underneath the coast road at the southern tip of Turkey. That's Cyprus in the distance in the outside view.

You've too much time on your hands EML 😂
But at least we've established its Cyprus and I wasn't imagining it 👍

To be honest I was actually surprised that we could see Cyprus so clearly from the van, I knew it was there of course, although I thought it looked around 35 - 40 miles away but that Telegraph journalist in the article I pasted above says 70 miles but I think 70km is more realistic but regardless of any of it I would recommend a motorhome holiday in Turkey to anyone we made fantastic memories there and will go back again soon 😉 👍

I would love to do it in the van having cycled most of the coast from Izmir to Alanya, over 10 or 11 holidays not all in one go I will add, loved the country and loved the people (y) fantastic memories as you say, so much more to see though as not made it to Cappadocia yet.
