My wife & I are leaving for Europe in January & wondering which is the best company for European motorhome Insurance? & We will be taking our dog with us on our adventure I'm being told to get a European passport for my dog, but I don't know what the difference is & how to obtain one??

I dont know about dog stuff but for insurance, it depends on how long you intend to be away.
We travel extensively so the two insurers that we have used which cater for 365 days abroad are Safeguard and (age qualifying) Saga.
I believe Comfort also do this but I’ve no experience of them. Maybe NFU too?

Happy travels. The mainland is so geared up for motorhoming that when you get back you’ll realise how anti-motorhoming this country actually is.

Comfort works for us.

What insurance are you referring to? Insuring the vehicle to be on the road, breakdown insurance or travel insurance?

We have Comfort for vehicle insurance across nearly all of Europe, plus Breakdown insurance for another £65. We get travel insurance included with our Lloyds bank account.

You will have to get an Animal Heath Certificate (AHC) or a Pet Passport from another European country to get your dog over and back. Never needed it so others should be able to give you more information.

You will need an animal health certificate from your vet- if they do them. Expensive for what it is. If over £100 I would look up PassPets in Havant nr Portsmouth. Then you need find a vet in the EU who will issue a n EU petpassport. I used https://www.veterinairejaucot.be/contact/
In Belgium. She charges €50 for issue. 1-5 days before return to the UK, you will need to find another vet to administer worming tablets and sign the petpassport and I would suggest the AHC as well. Good luck Europe loves Motorhomes and dogs.

The Animal Health Certificate is required to take a dog from UK to EU, if it doesn't have an EU Pet Passport. It costs over £100 and lasts only a few months. So you'll have to get a new AHC every time you go, if it's expired, unless you get a Pet Passport.

An EU Pet passport costs about 50 euro and lasts 10 years.Definitely worth it of you go abroad regularly. You can only get them from an EU Vet.

As said you will need an AHC for dog to leave the UK .It lasts 4 months so you will need to get a european pet passport somewhere as otherwise if you exceed the 4 months he can't come back without paperwork from a european country.
You need to clarify what other type of insurance you want?

In France at the moment with our Schitzu whist most places we have visited to eat drink or just chill welcome us and our dog a major problem we have found is traveling on buses with our dog. Apparently it is up to the individual bus driver to decide wether to let us on with the dog. We are currently at the Yallow site Les Tournels and earlier in the week managed to get the bus to St Tropez for a stroll and enjoyable lunch whereby the dog was most welcome. Two days latter walked to the bus stop some 500mtrs in the searing heat only to be not allowed on the bus . Frustrating but what would have been worse if we had been allowed to travel but refused on the return.

With regard to pet insurance we are insured with Pet plan and covered for European travel.
Good luck with your travels and don,t let my ranting put you off. We are 2 weeks in of a 4 week break and enjoying it.

Safeguard for Van, Marks and Sparks for you and PetPlan for the dogs.
All cover 90 days+ in EU.

I thought that the passport was the life of the dog. Got a Spanish passport in March 51€ with a 3 year rabbies vaccine and check up.

It is .
The AHC to leave the Uk is a piece of paper vaild for 4 months. In actual fact the AHC is not even meant for what the UK & defra are doing with it as it is usually used solely for exporting of animals & has been basta*$=ised to allow return within 4 months.

How long do you intend being away? A lot of campsites will be closed at that time of the year and water turned off in a lot of aires.
