We had an incident on the A63 autoroute 50 miles south of Bordeaux in September, which required us to be recovered off the autoroute. We were taken to a local recovery companies garage. They could not source the required parts for the trailer in France, so these were sourced from the UK trailer manufacturer and shipped over. Subsquently fitted at the garage and a few weeks later on we went.

The point of this is that our travel insurance company, Nationwide for the recovery and Shield for the trailer repairs, have both been excellent! Provided help and advise when needed, i.e. on the side of the autoroute :) and for the repairs. Both companies have reimbursed as per their policies with no quibbles (y)

Just in case they read this, thank you.

Great to here about insurers doing the job properly...........which they do most of the time, but it’s only the bad news that gets publicity.

Its not just the bad news that causes complaints but often people who don't comply with the insurers requirements or honestly forget things they ought to declare then find the payout doesn't happen.

We were recovered in France at the end of the summer under our Nationwide Flexplus policy - see other thread titled 'First Time Broken Down Abroad' for fuller details of the saga if interested. The recovery service and getting us home was smooth but as our part wouldn't arrive/garage couldn't fit it in before we left for home (and we had to get back) we had to leave the vehicle behind and then have it repatriated. That bit didn't go as expected and the van has only just arrived at our home garage yesterday, 7 weeks after we requested the repatriation! 3 weeks max is what the Ts & Cs say so the added delay was unexpected and stressful and we have raised this with Nationwide. Still, glad to have it back and the mechanic said the magic words 'quite easy to fix' so even better. We will probably stick with Nationwide as now we know it works but if it ever happened again we would have the repair done out there and go back to drive it home.

Oh and a big shout out to Pearce Recovery and Breakdown Service from Leighton Buzzard which was the company at the bottom of the sub-contracting chain and driver Stuart who actually went out and collected the vehicle and brought it back. Their service and communication was by far the best throughout the whole repatriationprocess so thanks to Hannah, Sue and Stuart. If you ever need recovery from abroad give them a look.
