Lots now
we have been out and about in our motorhome since the 4th July eaten out once and been for drinks in a pub 3 times, quite happy with social distancing mostly drinking in the beer garden.
Just asked about a drink in a pub at Mousehole Cornwall and it was no problem but you have to download the government track and trace system.
After so much discussion about data protection I actually havnt downloaded it and as it was on the spot I actually declined and walked away. We have previously given name number etc to the pub manually and I was happy with that.
My question is am I wrong to be concerned, is this the only way forward or should I just download it and carry on ?

All Joking apart about "paranoia". I too would be wary of any Tracking, but then I have had a bad experience with a Tracking App. Finished up getting all sorts of Advertising CRAP. So now it is permanently turned OFF. I rarely load a new app but when/if I do the first thing I do is turn any location Off. Only put it on IF I use said app. On i-phone there is a facilty to only turn tracking on when the app is in use?

Was happy to give name and phone no at the establishments we have used. not even tried to download the track and trace after the farce of trying to join a research site, no app but got emails every day for weeks.
Also have location switched off unless an app is in use.

but you have to download the government track and trace system.

Didn't realise that the Government had released an App yet on the mainland.

Did they give you any further details of the App they wanted you to use? There are a few third party apps out there, just wondered if the pub was using one of those.

If you use an Android device you may find it is already loaded. Look in Goggle settings, all my Android devices have it though it is not activated as yet. Don't know about Apple devices. The app isn't fully loaded yet, just waiting for the government to make its mind up.

Funny, how the word 'track' has got in to the lexicon, when the Government's scheme is called 'Test and Trace' . ;)

And if it's a Government recommended app, I wouldn't have any hesitation using it. Whilst I don't want my personal financial security compromised, I don't have anything else particularly significant to hide... :giggle:

From the outset it was 'Test, track & trace' They dropped the track part as they couldn't get it to work.

As far as I can see the only thing currently "tracking" me is Google and I'm not really bothered about it, I've got nothing to hide so why not? As for only having tracking allowed in a Covid related app in operation when the app is in use, what's the point of it even taking up memory? It would be useless!

I've not been asked for tracing details anywhere up to now but, in the right context, I would be perfectly happy, as I would be using a dedicated covid tracer app. However I don't think there is one yet for general use in the UK. Once again, they can't make their minds up. I understand Ireland has a working system, have to see if they want me to use it when we go there in September.

I've obviously misunderstood this track and trace thing all along.
I'm under the impression they use your phone number to contact you if it appears you had contact with an infected person.... Nothing to do with tracking your location.
If it was, what would the gov do, come and drag you off to a secret location for tests and hold you there forever.

Most places I have been in have a QR CODE TO SCAN ? then fill in details

I have nothing to hide, but do object to the fact that the government ordered all phone companies to send out an update to the operating system that includes a Covid tracker a few weeks back. I prefer to opt in or even an option to opt out, but that has not been offered

Is that why I have suddenly started getting dozens of strange emails trying to sell me exotic and bizarre items for use in the bedroom. I'm fed up of having to spend time deleting them. I have not opened any of them but don't know how to stop them.

No, that is spam, the covid tracker installed without consent has nothing to do with that

As I've posted before, I've been online for over 25 years and the only spam & ads I get are for adult dating

Now, anyone who knows me would tell you that there is absolutely no way I could be classed as an adult🙂

I point blank don't trust anything digital anymore. I am a complete and utter wojamacallit

We went to a couple of pubs for meals on our trip, only one asked for contact details

Everywhere I've been has asked for varying amounts of contact details & data, sometimes more than is actually required... which I'm comfortable enough to give.
Whether anyone uses it to trace me if someone tests positive, I'm less than convinced.

Do you have any sources for this? Wasn't the Government still making a mess of its own app when this was rolled out?

Yes its a fact.
Check out your phones OS...
If it's up to date, there's a "exposure notification" option...

Installed on my phone without asking;

At the moment, it's my choice to enable or not... but in the future who knows.

It was reported here before and I thought it doubtable so checked my own phone and there it is with no option to delete

I'm not doubting that it is on phones. Just questioning whether the Government ordered it. I thought that was installed to make it easier for T&T apps to work when they were installed.

As was explained when this was first raised no tracing app has been installed on your phone. What was installed was an update to the OS to allow a subsequently installed tracing app to work. I guess it might allow Bluetooth to run in the background.

This is shown in the screenshot you posted.

"To turn on COVID-19 exposure notifications install a participating app".

Have you installed such an app? I doubt it and if you have it will be listed in the apps and you can uninstall it.

I didn't say it was... I simply said that the OS has been amended, without the users consent.

I have left my name and telephone number at any pubs or restaurants I have attended but must admit would probably walked away too if asked to download an App there and then - but that’s because I am suspicious and awkward! ::bigsmile:

They do that every time they update OS. But the claim was a covid tracker has been installed without your permission. It hasn't but the OS has had capabilities added to it to enable such a tracker to work - if and when one is added by you later. If you don't want to load the app then don't.

It in't a Covid tracker. It is an update to the phone firmware that provides a certain functionality should it ever be needed and should you decide to download one of the apps that uses it. Any concern about tracking can be prevented by turning off GPS anyway.
