Hi all.

I've seen from calais to the Spanish border is about 4 hours slower if I select avoid tolls on Google maps.
Does anyone know what the total toll cost is on the quickest route from calais.

I'm going to a place just over the border called Biescas if that helps

Must have been about €100 for us but that was 11 years ago, I'm sure it will be a lot more now.

Via Michelin can work it out. This is for a petrol car.

We do a mix of toll and non toll. The problem with just putting it in the satnav is that some tolls are worth doing because the other routes are a hassle, Bayonne is a good example . With somewhere like Biescas there are several choices of route, either to Irun and down ( where the non toll N121 is pretty good) or cut off through Dax and use Somport, which is shorter saves a boatload of tolls and is quite a nice run although will probably take a little longer.

Best bet is buy one of these

Where toll and non toll are colour coded and then make a plan.

Well meant but this is a bit misleading. It includes fuel but for a Clio, and journey times are going to be totally different especially on the twisty bits. I usually try and avoid the bit of A28 between Rouen and Alencon because the tolls are particularly expensive.

I avoid the toll roads. It's way cheaper, more interesting and the trip becomes a bit more part of the holiday. Why Calais, unless you live in Kent? It's the farthest point from Spain and also means you have to get round Paris.

We pay the €1.50 toll on the French/Spanish border but that's it.

we went to Benidorm last winter and it cost roughly £175 each way in tolls from Calais. Given the Spanish tolls were around £35 each way then for France its was around £140.

As mentioned earlier A28 between Rouen and Alencon was pretty expensive relative to other sections. Additionally, unless you come off the motorways and find a local fuel station then the cost of fuel is expensive too.

Whilst its convenient, at what was for us £350 plus, it's a hell of a cost to the holiday. So will be looking at doing things differently this year.

Caen to Somport tunnel £54 last month, 3.5t A-class
Did intend to take my time, sole driver, raining all the way - put cruise control on tolls, 2 stops (free) - less work driving and easier on the van (y)

Hi Tobyquest we’ve just returned this weekend from the same trip. Did Eurotunnel to epernay then Macon into Castellane then onto mirepoix and Laruns then over the Col de pourtalet to biascas . All tolls about 230 euros.

Im on quite a budget due to a number of set backs recently, so looking for the absolute cheapest way, appreciate all the replies, its given me a lot to consider.

I see the ferry from portsmouth to caen saves me about 280km getting to spain, but the ferry takes 4 hours longer than calais and costs about £25 more, so it probably only saves about £25 on diesel. So maybe thats an option.

The ferries to spain seem to be about £360 the cheapest and i feel like paying £120 on the ferry to calais, i could drive down to spain and spend the same balance of £240 or less to get there.

The tolls seem like a lot and although they save km (although someone mentioned not necessarily) they are usually flatter and smoother, but basically dont seem like they save that much time or fuell, relative to how much they cost, therefore suit those who arent fussed about paying the toll price. Is that fair enough to say?

We use the toll roads with a tag as we tow a car trailer and driving through villages with all of their speed bumps and chicanes and speed limits makes it hard work and takes forever.
So tolls are more convenient for us and we don’t need to be in a hurry and can leave for stops and refuel where it’s cheaper😊much less stressful😊👍

In the end I booked a ferry from Portsmouth to Caen, because its quicker to reach the terminal and only £25 more than going to calais. Its 6 hours on the ferry, but 280km shorter so i figure ill get some rest and a chance to do more admin etc on the ferry as ill have enough driving to do as it is.

So ill probably put the address in google maps and follow the Avoid Tolls option. Is that the best suggestion? It looks similar/the same as the maps youve shared.

Do these routes all go up and over the pyrennees or do some go through a tunnel. Thats the only part i might be prepared to pay the toll for depending how much it is, due to all the fuel going up the mountains and hammering the brakes coming down the other side.

The Somport tunnel is free - and very long:giggle:
Take the times on satnav and Google maps with a big pinch of salt. I add at least 20%, not including breaks.
Good choice of route by the way.(y)

Bear in mind it's often harder driving on you and the motorhome. We pay the tolls for the easier, constant 65mph for us, rather than the stopping sometimes every 6km for a roundabout on some routes. We don't always use the toll, but do where it saves us > 2 hours, or if we are doing a 5 hour journey if it gets us a few more hundred km down road.

I think if I was going Spain I'd be ferrying it down to Santander for precisely that reason, then just drive in Spain.

We're just about to finish our current (2-3 weeker) tour of France, and would not be without our Toll pass machine from Fulli now, given being able to use the far right, non stop truck lane (you constantly drive at 30mph even though the toll booths with one). This saves time.

As pointed out above, sometimes you want the toll for a pretty view, Pont de Normandy as one example, but you are joining at Caen so below that! I think that bridge is 12 euro 50 alone, but is far more convient than the non-tolled 1 hour diversion to avoid it.

Ref just using Google Maps, be sure to have data for traffic ahead, and also manually set waypoints is my tip so you see the things you want to on way back, or you may end up with a diversion due to traffic taking you an entirely different route.

We will be heading down that way at the end of Sept for 6 weeks trip. Will be taking 5 days or six days of driving non toll roads from Caen to get down to L'Escala. I may jump on the toll past Narbonne depending on what Waze tells me the traffic situation is. The town was gridlocked last year when we went that way.
Reckon it will cost me around £200 for the fuel and a couple of campsites on the way down.
I'll be booking the ferry back from Bilboa or Santander as soon as the winter schedule is released.

If you go non-toll make sure your sat nav does not take you through the centre of every village and town in France! I know ours does if I ask it to map the shortest route. Most if not all villages and towns have by passes which if you can stand a multitude of roundabouts makes the journey much quicker if not more interesting.
Enjoy which ever way your go

Yes us too because we never go at max speed on any road in the mh. And bear in mind lots of roundabouts can really slow you don’ down

I find with my TomTom that I am slower that the estimate on motorways/dual carriageways but faster than the estimate when using ordinary single carriageway roads. The satnav does not, however, make allowances for my prostate but they say you should take a break every so often anyway. ;)

Never use "Shortest route" because as you say that could end up taking you through some really tight roads and small villages..... because its the shortest way.... always use "Quickest/easiest route"..

Great!
Google did that to me a few years back - decided afterwards - if the suggested road didn't have a white line down the middle I wasn't using it....
