Need help in ascertaining the correct torque for attaching a tow bar fitted bike rack. TIA

On mine I just tighten till it seems tight. I know that sounds daft but it works.

I would have thought 50lbs would be about right.

Really need to know the size of the fasteners and their quality.
Just as dangerous to overtighten than to undertighten.

It’s a strange one if it grips the ball, as a plate bears down from the bolt onto the ball. That’s how mine works.

Normally you are right, it would depend on the fastener.

I never check the torque on mine.

The length of the supplied spanner is probably a good guide. Assuming the average person heaves on it until it feels right. I do that then nudge it with my foot.

Growing up, it was also my understanding that spanners were typically designed so used normally they could not lever too much torque.
Not sure if I’d assume that anymore with the choice available and powered tools, etc.

Hi

Have you checked with the manufacturers supplied paperwork?
They would normally give required torque settings for critical fixings.

It needs to be FT!!

Guys I suspect your joking however bolts need to be set to the correct torque guessing or FT can be a serious safety issue particularly on a critical part like something that may fall off such as a wheel or tow bar !

I can honestly say every nut and bolt on my Track car is torqued so if the car falls off track it’s because the nut behind the steering wheel looses it. (Having said this I have had the odd wheel nut come loose despite this and is why you should check the torque of your wheels after changing them post 50kms of driving).
