Yesterday, I failed to download an update on my sat nav, which has a lifetime of free updates. This failure corrupted my existing maps and finally left me without any maps on my device.
A technical member of TomTom stepped in to help, but failed, his parting shot was, I can only replace your old maps and will email you with a link to do so. I am still waiting for that link, but no joy. I now have a TomTom sat nav which is absolutely useless.
I wonder if these lifetime downloads are honoured after a certain age. I was asked at one point how old it was.

Many electronic devices have a built in obsolescence in that the software updates become much larger than the hardware is able to run. My Tom Tom went in the bin years ago

Free Lifetime updates is actually free updates until tomtom decide the device is at the end of its life
& this can be as short as 4 years

Lifetime maps are, generally, only until the storage capacity of the unit can accommodate the sizes of the update files.

I had the same problem on my Truck 6000 but l persevered and did eventually manage to download them again so do keep trying.
l have now decided not to do any updates and will probably move it on and start again with new.

Haven't updated nmine for well over a year.
The last one I checked and there was NOTHING relating to UK mapping but the update still took 7 hours.
I won't be venturing into Europe again so I'll stick with the maps I have.

Ive got Tom Tom truck with lifetime updates. Cue laughter😂.
Used for past glories, but asked as to why I was unable to download the updates a couple of years ago was told I would need to buy a new set of maps. Good bye TT, hello Google.
TBF my big toy days are behind me now other than vintage buses a couple or three times a year to shows locally.

Yup!!! Google maps from now on. I would never buy another TomTom.

I've got a Garmin with lifetime updates if you don't update within 15 months they cancel the updates. Last time I updated it it couldn't do the whole of Europe files were too big. Don't actually use it any more but it's the principle if you buy something with lifetime updates that's what you expect to get.

Updating the Garmin is one of my regular January tasks. Fingers crossed, every time!

Of more concern is what will happen at the end of June this year when Garmin parts company with its traffic data provider. Another free "lifetime" feature.

Well I had a Tom Tom on my i phone
For about 3 years fantastic never let me down went all over Portugal Spain France Sweden Norway and Finland, and UK
Just after the three years we’re up I went to download the new lifetime update and it would not take it (although phone had loads of spare memory as it was 256mb model ) so it was obviously the Tom Tom model itself that could not handle update for whatever reason, but Tom Tom then offered me a new Tom Tom go which I downloaded ok for free for 3 years, which after the third year was up (last year) I now have to pay just £12.50 per year !!!!!! And it still works perfectly after being on my phone for over 4 years now !!!!! So Tom Tom for me !!!!!!!!!!

I kept the packaging of my Garmin Camper 760 LMTD-D. On the box it says:

"Lifetime traffic applies for the useful life of your product or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic and safety camera alerts not available for all areas. Lifetime Maps entitle you to receive map updates when and as such updates are made available by Garmin during the life of one compatible Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from a third party supplier, whichever is shorter. Not transferable to another Garmin product. Additional memory (purchase required) may be necessary for future map updates. See www.garmin.com/details for lifetime traffic, lifetime maps and safety camera details, coverage and terms and conditions. "

The packaging doesn't define "useful life" or "during the life of one compatible Garmin product". Drawing the consumer's attention to terms and conditions stated on Garmin's website is not good enough IMO and any good Judge should give it short thrift.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies to digital content supplied "free" with goods like Satnavs.

In a nutshell, all written terms must be in plain and intelligible language. Terms that relate to the amount to be paid or which define the subject matter of the contract are only exempt from the fairness test if transparent and prominent. Prominence is a new requirement since 2015. The more onerous and unusual a clause, the more prominent it must be.

Accordingly, manufacturers' contract terms that limit the extent of "lifetime" updates or digital services must comply with the "prominence" requirement to be effective against a consumer who buys such satnavs whether they be Tomtoms or Garmins. I would argue that Tomtom and Garmin cannot rely on T&Cs on their respective websites after the event, because these fail the "prominence" test. Realistically the buyer is unlikely to have read and understood them in advance, or to have been asked by the retailer to read specific definitions and terms that limit "lifetime" prior to the actual purchase. After the purchase, such T&Cs completely fail to pass that test, so the manufacturer shoud not be permitted to rely on them to either exclude or limit their obligation to provide "lifetime" digital update services.

[my liability for E&O is excluded and usual disclaimers apply ... ]

Tomtom have declared some models, generally those with 2mb or less of internal memory, and now mostly 10 and more years old, obsolete but have stated that any of the devices concerned that were sold with lifetime Map updates that promise will still be honoured. So anyone with a Tomtom unit with lifetime map updates should be offered them. Tomtom introduced some time ago dates that showed on the units for when map updates were valid until, why they dd this I do not know, however if you contact them and indicate that map updates , or Traffic and Cameras if also affected, then they will quickly sort out the settings for your unit on the TT servers and restore any lost promised service.

Hi DelMar if you have spoken to Tomtom then I am afraid that you have been in contact with a Spam website as Tomtom have not had a Phone Line Customer Service since the start of the current crisis. There are a number of Spam websites which regrettably have successfully taken monies for services that are in many cases free from Tomtom. What model TT unit do you have?

I would recommend anyone who has a problem with their Tomtom to go onto the Tomtom forum <Broken link removed> and log into your Tomtom account there and use the question facility to indicate their problem and generally you will be able to get a solution quite quickly. Regularly those that indicate on the forum that their Lifetime Maps promise has stopped have had the service restored within 24 hours.

Have just updated our TomToms John gave me his old one when he got a new one. It updated ok, got offered a good amount off a new one, sent an email saying I wasn't interested in the ones they were offering, but would be happy to have that discount off a tomtom camper
they acknowledged receipt of the email. but no response to my request :ROFLMAO:
Find that google maps take us on some really funny routes, We have a couple of really good routes to tne A63 but google tries to take us through routes hardly suitable for a bike.
Had some very interesting journeys when following a couple who were using google in Germany. off a main road and through housing estates to end up back on the same road.
John happy with it in his car, have used it in an emergency when tom has decided not to talk to me.
Is anyone still using co-pilot?
