We have the Thetford C260 which has an electric filter system. A filter costs around £20 and only lasts one camping season which Thetford estimate to be 4 weeks. :Eeek:
So against all the safety warnings on the pack never to open the filter box. I have.

So its just a bit of carbon sponge with 100g of activated carbon granules as far as I can see. So I will just refill it myself.

good idea, please let us know where you source the granules etc from

I've ordered activated carbon granules off ebay also some carbon foam.

I'm no expert at this just someone fed up with the filters being a rip off. :)

That has been on my 'to do' list for a few weeks now - so thanks for the info. Seem to be a number of suppliers for the activated charcoal foam, but not looked for the granules, so thanks again for your research, The Thetford retail price seems a little bit opportunistic!

I built my own sog filter system using cabon impregnated filter sheet which is used for over hob extract units....................cheap as chips and works a treat.

No wonder they didn't want you to open it! :giggle:

I was aware of refilling these. Decided not to bother. Did 7 years in our van without ever changing one. Can't say it caused any issues. (y)

You truly are an eco warrior for motorhomers.

It hasn't been an issue for us either to be honest. This is the first time I've changed it. One reason was I didn't know you were supposed to. :D2

All of the above................. the filter removes the smell on it's way out.

Cassettes have worked for years without that.

Sounds like a mod designed to sell parts.

As for smwells we close the blade and that locks out anything from the cassette, and even when we open it the smell is mainly of the cheap s/market Bio washing machine capsules we use.

I have the underfloor SOG the green canister filters are £25, I refill them myself with active charcoal at about £3-£4 a pop.
Soon to be redundant I going to covert it to roof venting then no filter required.

Just answering your question! Everyone must choose their own path.

Not for you perhaps, but you weren't outside while using it ;) Honestly waking up thinking you are eating poo is not pleasant, thanks to a dutch camper, now check to see if their is a visible sog befor chosing my pitch.
For those whose sog vents out the roof, that's sometimes just a nice height to be level with my overgarage window  ??

SOGS as far as I know do vent out the smells, hence your "experience".
On the Thetford filters it passed through the filter and back into the cassette. There is no external outlet. You would have been safe by me ??

Surely, if when you open the slide on the loo and a fan starts AND a filter is fitted it must vent externally.( Either underneath or via the roof.) Otherwise why fit a filter? It has been found that some systems that use the filters shown in this thread that no floor vent has actually been fitted by the manufacturer.

You must have a one off then, standard installation has an 80mm hole though the floor under the cassette.

A chance missed for an exit point for the water that leaks in. :giggle:

I don't think that is correct. The filter shown is for an air fliter which is Thetford's equivalent to a SOG. Air is extracted from the cassette, passes through the flter and is vented to the underside of the motorhome via a pipe through the floor. Or at least that is what has been done on the last two motorhomes I have had.

Thanks for that. How easy was it to open the plastic case and how will you reseal it please.

Its just stuck together with the label. So when the stuff arrives to refill it I will just use sellotape if the label doesn't stick anymore.
