To fill or not. That is the question.

.
I am starting to carry out the service on a Fiat Ducato diesal in the next week or so .

I have all the items required for the oil change and I have someone going to remove and clean the injectors if they need it ?

anyway the question is.
after I remove the Diesal fuel filter do I fill the new one with fuel before fitting it .or is there some thing else like bleeding it from the bottom.

jusy something simple but if you don’t know the answer it’s better to ask.

I am ok. With everything else done a few oil changes but not a Diesal filter. A petrol car mainly has an electric fuel pump. Not sure if this does yet.

Mine is the older green plastic housing (well I think it’s green) when it leaked as they do. I replaced it and didn’t fill the new one with diesel. When turning on the ignition it primed itself. I would think yours would do the same.

I've always primed diesel filters before fitting, regardless of mechanical or electric fuel pump.
It ensures that there is no fuel starvation at the injectors.

If you turn the ignition on, the low pressure pump will start and throw fuel towards the high pressure pump. On mine it has a bleed screw you just open and fuel fills it.

Obviously, don’t crank the engine.

Even if they self prime, it makes it easier on the starter motor if you have filled the filter first, it's what all the mechanics I know do.

I wouldn't worry about the injectors unless you are having a specific issue that points you in that direction.

Fill the filter with a mixture of injector cleaner and fuel before you replace it may sure its tight or it will leak let the pump prime it, bleed if there is a bleed screw. start and keep running, put balance of cleaner in the tank

I thought Ducato had an electric pump that switches on with the ignition.
It starts pumping fuel around the pipework and filter and back to the tank automatically.
Give it a minute to fill everything.
Removing injectors can be an big issue --- unless you feel they are faulty

Always a safe bet to fill any liquid filter first.

Our 2013 fiat ducato has a metal fuel filter, electric pump in the fuel tank.
After changing filter turn ignition key to dash lights on, wait till pump stops. Turn off. Turn key on to dash lights, wait till pump stops, start engine.
Thats the procedure I used, no problems at all.

Also worked on our 2005 peugeot base motorhome.

Fill the filter if possible, not easy at the roadside, then turn ignition on to prime. The filter is self priming on most modern vehicles, but the pick up pump will prime

Getting the injectors out can be a real pain in the arse, and they have been known to seize in and or snap when trying to remove them

I would also agree, if the injectors are working then leave them alone. A snapped injector is a royal pain!

Depends on age, my 2001 2.8idtd doesn’t have a lift pump so I always fill filter with fuel.

Do you refill the filter with diesel drained from the old filter or fresh ? is the old likely to be contaminated ?

Thanks to all the forum members for that advice.
I will use fresh diesal just to set it up and follow other members instructions on ignition but not starting it.

thanks again for your help and advice.

Just a word of warning, the fuel filter in your picture does not look like one from a X250 or X290 but older. Just check the it is self priming?

Always best practice to fill the new filter with fresh diesel even on a self prime system, just aids the restarting of the system
