Since 2008 & many years tugging
Just before we left for our trip, last week I discovered our tracker wasn't working the SIM card was not replying.
A quick search on line and loads of people with the same problem, looks like Giffgaff have updated their text format. So it's find a new SIM that works or a new tracker.

Went for a new tracker bought a Rewire DB2, £60 on their site got one on Amazon for £35 but it has an inbuilt SIM which costs £80 per year.
It works brilliantly giving full GPS tracking with history of up to a year & good backup.

Still working on 1p mobile - £30 for the year runs out December.
I use the 1p mobile in my tracker too. The £30 credit needed to keep it active for a year is plenty.

Also use it in the mifi, using the credit to buy a data bundle when we're away.

I whish I'd bought the Rewire to start with it gives so much more info.

This was yesterday.

Hi lenny my t102 on giffgaff is still working this morning
After I first discovered it it did work once but texts came back the next day so not much use.
If you do a Web search you will find loads of people with problems.
IMO not worth the risk to continue with it.

I have a Giffgaff sim in my spare emergency phone & obviously during the pandemic period we have not been travelling so it is not on. I got an email from Giffgaff the other day telling me to use the phone in the next month by sending a text, phone call or using data or I would loose the payg contract. Perhaps this is connected too with the problems you speak of

No not connected as I said loads of reports on the web about the problem.

The Rewire I bought the sim is built in can't be changed.
I expect your one is not reliant on the old TEXT, text format and can handle the more modern PDU text format.

Now the text bit went above my head Lenny but the sim is not built in and continues to msg.

Just tried mine all working ok

My Giffgaff SIM is still working perfectly in a TK103, as is the one in a spare old phone which I had the email to 'Use or Lose' last week.

There are many configurable options with the TK103 if you can understand the Chinglish manual including warning messages if the vehicle is moved etc. Configuration is done by sending text messages to the TK103, the config can be extracted from the unit using a USB cable to a PC.

Mine wouldn't even respond to basic command text and if you rang it you didn't get a text back with location.
When I tried the move command on mine it would text you every 10 min when the vehicle was stationary.
The TK 103 is a generic unit made by several companies that could explain the different results, fairly certain no USB port on mine.

Anyway it prompted me to change and I'm well pleased with the Rewire unit it is so much better and you have support with it.

I've had two of ReWire trackers for a couple of years now (one on the car too) Been really pleased with the units, the website/ app and the service - should you need it. I went for the 104-Pro models with the integrated battery - just in case power was cut it lasts for a good six weeks under it's own steam.

I only bought the cheapie impressed with their backup & it works really well.
