Hi everyone, we were thinking about tinting the habitation windows from privacy, and wondered if 20% would be enough or should we go more.

We looked inside a few van conversions with tinted windows at the recent Newbury show.

They were awful, gave a very dark and dingy look to the interior.. they needed the lights on (daytime) to see anything.

Thank you for your replies, just needed advice as we are newbies.
I guess we will stick to the flies screens then. Once again thank you for replies and advice.

We have tinted windows on this van, & applied tinted film on our last van. I can’t remember what percentage the film was, I’m afraid, but I do know that neither van was or is dark & dingy looking! We love the tint, as the fly screen do reduce the light, & you can’t see out as clearly!

Love our tinted windows - great for daytime privacy whilst still being able to see out clearly - they are Seitz S4 but don't know what percentage of tint. No lack of light but we do have a lot of wall & roof windows.

Monkeynuts2215 I think I would apply that film you can buy from the likes of The Range, Wilco etc. We have applied it to our house windows & fits with no glue so can be removed easily you just need a tiny gap around the edge so when it expands in the sun it doesn’t go past the edge or it will come off. Just spray the glass with water, apply film & squeegee out the water. Hey presto stuck! You can get different patterns or clear & different light density but it still lets the light in. I can’t see why it would not stick to plastic windows too. At the price worth a try & possibly what Stonemags76 was referring to

I would suggest you do some research on the actual film you buy because I have found that some of them fade over time to the extent they are almost clear, also if anyone is thinking of applying tint to a heated screen if you need to remove the film it will take the elements with it so will no longer be heated.

According to a thread on the Autosleeper owner’s forum on tinted windows if using an applied tint it’s no greater than 5% on their pvcs

If you've got tints so you need inside lights on all the time, won't that decrease privacy?

We are Newbies with a brand new Knaus Boxstar street Anniversary model so maybe its best we stick to the fly screens at first. Thank you for your input much appreciated 👍

Ours are automotive tint around 20% and you don’t need lights on during the day, they do help to keep the van cooler and privacy is good 2C1EC470-BB89-4FFD-8325-094E729C0111.jpeg3D2D2198-6CB9-466B-B924-DDD7BE8D3A7F.jpeg50014146-BF4F-48A4-B224-9AACC07F0F0A.jpeg

Sounds wise as sticking some things on the windows may cause damage & that would be very expensive! Read a few times about using sticky tape to attach Xmas decorations caused motorhome windows to crack which was thought to be some reaction with the sellotape but that theory wasn't proven.
We would pay extra for (factory supply) tinted windows another time if they didn't come as standard as it's one of our favourite things about our motorhome & our car too.

I've had a few cars done over the years and the local company that I use always recommend no more than 30%. When that's applied to a car it looks quite dark and more than dark enough. Consider that when looking through the vehicle it is 30% on each side of the vehicle!
The company use 3M film by the way.
Also consider that the windows already may have a very slight tint to them so you could be adding more tint over the top.
I always like the look of caravans with dark tints, like a Fleetwood. I went into one for a look and it was very dark, but it may have been a very heavy tint.

I've tinted dozens of campervan windows. The degree of tint is vital for light. Best to obtain samples first and try them before you make your choice. Tint on plastic windows can be a big problem. Certain tints have a cruel glue that makes the plastic react badly causing crazing. Once fitted it's not very difficult to remove unless you use the removable tint.

Our globecar has blackened habitation windows. We wouldn't have thought of having them before we got it but it really does give good privacy. They are considerably darker than 20% though

Anyone recommend a window tinting firm in Yorkshire?

Cheers James

Here is a photo from inside my lounge of the ones that self attach with no glue I have described above. You can see how much they prevent anyone seeing through and the light still coming through. Also the small gap I’ve left around the edge so they don’t fall off, but I think if I’d wanted to I could have made that even smaller. A photo is worth a thousand words as they say.

So, I think I’ve read this thread correctly.
those that have tinted windows like them and those that don’t have them don’t like them.
that’s that sorted then.

I love the idea of tinting our motorhome windows, if it darkens things down a bit, so much the better.

I simply cannot fathom out the fascination with brightly lit motorhomes & the worst of them all have bright white walls & ceiling with no texture, same goes for those bloody HEKI thingies, yuk. Had a few vans with them & its impossible to sleep when the sun gets up as the blinds are crap which here in Scotland is about 1am in mid summer.
I prefer my motorhome to be cosseting with warm colours. Each to their own I suppose.

I’d recommend a firm near us in Eastbourne called TINTWISE. It does an absolutely brilliant job with no sign that it is aftermarket tinting. However you would have a pretty long drive basically the whole length of the country!!
