When Getting timing belt replaced I have been reading that the water pump should also be replaced is this correct ?

Also does anyone know cost and whether it should be done by a Fiat dealer or good mechanic that does a lot of Motorhomes any advice appreciated.

Personally I would change the water pump and pulleys as well as the belt.

Labour to strip again if water pump goes is a lot more than a new pump.

Any trusted independent can do the job doesn’t need to be MoHo specific ?

Edit someone will be along to give you an idea on price no doubt ?

Yes, standard practice. Fiat specialist not required but choose a garage who you trust to use quality parts, ideally manufacturer’s parts. There have been stories of replacement cambelts failing early - maybe they came from China or were knocked up by a 7yr old in Mumbai? Probably £400/£500 job.

As above, if the pump fails after belt renewal the costs for replacing will be the same as belt renewal (minus belt/pulley cost) plus cost of new pump.
The new belt has to come off to fit the belt.
A new belt tensioner will put additional strain on an old pump.
Belt, pulley's and pump..... Probably around £400 to £450 at an independent garage

I N A or Gates for belts etc.

No need to buy from dealers as they don’t make them anyway ?

another vote for a GATES full kit and a reliable mechanic @ around £400 - £500

No pump fitted for me. pump had only done 6thou miles. Rubber degrades with time, pumps don‘t, so depends on usage.

£50 for a pump not worth the risk and if the van has only done 6k in 5 years probably a higher chance of the pump bearing failing. If a pump siezes it will strip the cam belt which is usually terminal for the engine. Save 50 quid against £7-8k for a new engine.

A pump, it’s fitting, and anti freeze isn’t £50 though

Dave Newell gives good honest advice here. I’m sure he’ll be able to offer professional advice if he reads this thread, all being well.

The cam belt is already off so that cost doesn't apply.
Antifreeze and fitting.... Another £50 or the antifreeze could be reused if it was recently changed so ½hr labour plus cost of pump.

Water pump failed on my Discovery.
New pump, blown head gasket, cylinder head skimmed, new top end gasket set and cam belt kit.

All for a £30 pump.... Luckily it was under extended warranty.

Interesting perspective in this months MMM mag.... I have always understood that the water pump should be replaced when doing timing chain but according to MMM Specialist, not so on 2.3lt Fiat Engines ....

"...depends on the vehicle. On some engines the water pump is highly accessible and is a small and inexpensive item. Not changing it is a false economy. On other vehicles - notably 2.3lt Fiat engines - the pump is is part of a large (and relatively expensive) casting and is not much more accessible even when the timing belt is being replaced. It is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle and, only if there are signs pf leakage or damage, should it be replaced."

Antifreeze is a lubricant and metal protector these days, so if it is old, you could have more wear on the pump. Get a quote for the full job, and for a belt change. That way you can decide if the extra payment is worth the peace of mind.
