What's a rough price I should be expecting to change the belt on my 2002 B524? Does £500 sound a bit steep?

Also read a few points on emptying the water before putting vans in for work as the boilers safety valve can open. Is this correct?

Valve could open if temp drops below 8c.
Probably worth emptying.
If it's the 2.8 jtd £500 sounds steep.
I've been quoted less and plan to have it done in new year
What part of country are you ?

I paid £550 recently for replacement of timing belt, engine oil & filter change and replace alternator (I supplied the new alternator) and MOT. I suspect I could have got the work done for less but I trust the garage who I have been using for about 9 years.

Small independent garage circa £350 would be a good price, if an A Class expect a little more

I'm in Edinburgh. Last quote I had was for just over £500 and that is for the belt only. A few of the smaller garages I trust can't manage for a while so trying a few of the more commercial places.

Waiting for a ring back with price from AM Philip who are Fiat here.

Regarding the valve opening will the power be disconnected as part of the work for the belt? As this will trigger the valve opening or sure I read that somewhere.

Depends what you decide to do, it could be anything from a few hundred quid to seven or eight hundred.
Some just replace the belt only, some replace all belts, pulleys and water pump.
Then, do you fit genuine FIAT parts or pattern parts?
Who does it? DIY, independent garage or FIAT Professional.
We have just had our 2014 2.3 done and the FIAT kit, before labour, was just short of £400 plus VAT.

Can't comment on price but I would stress the need to change all belts, pulleys, tensioner and water pump. To do different is a false and potentially very expensive economy. Many garages will disconnect the battery, it is best practice. Quality pattern parts often same as O E parts e g Dayco and Gates are 2 of the main belt manufacturers for vehicle manufacturers, likewise SKF for pulleys and tensioner. Neither Fiat nor Mercedes make their own belts or pulleys (bearings) so just get a quality brand from a trusted supplier.

Take it from a garage proprioter it is extreamly rare for the belt its self to snap.
95% it's pully/ tensioner or water pump failure that brings down the actual belts

100% agree which is why when in business I would never change just the belt. Thank you Geo.

While changing the belt, pulleys, tensioners etc. Get the water pump done at the same time. A lot cheaper then than when it is all back together. I think I read all the posts but someone else might have already suggested the water pump in which case I apologise for the duplication.

It should be noted that not all water pumps are cam belt driven
but when they are and it starts to leak a few months after a new belt kit was fitted, that kit will not/should not be used for a 2nd time
So you have wasted £300-£400
As a new belt and kit will be needed as well as the pump for the rebuild

OK a lot to digest here. I have it booked in for the 5th November at £500. Now I spoke to the guy before I had read all the replies so I am unsure what is all included in that price. I'd imagine it is not the whole cam belt kit.

Will give him a call tomorrow and double check and if it isn't I will get a price for the whole lot to be done.

Just got a tax rebate of £750 today so I'm guessing this job will soak up most of that

Interestingly when Audi contacted me about changing the belt on our A3.

Doing the water pump wasn’t part of the schedule and would add around £120 ?

The total for them to do it was around £700.

I questioned the price and was told it’s a very tricky job and labour intensive.

I managed it on our drive in around 5 hours.
Yes it’s a bit of a pain to do on the drive, easier in a workshop on a lift ?

If the garage had taken 5 hours the price would have been more than 700.:D

I’ve just been quoted ‘around £500 as it might take me a bit longer as the engine is tucked away and I’ve not done a motorhome one before ‘ He thought around 4 hours for the whole job.
That’s for the kit from Fiat and a full engine service from my trusted local garage. I didn’t think to ask what was in the kit.....but I will now.

Ours was £432 just for the full kit from Fiat Professional on our A class. The receptionist commented that the mechanic found it very awkward and time consuming.
No complaints from me as all the services upto the five year one have been very reasonable at North East Truck and Van in Hull.

Well phoned the garage to day to check and the mechanic says when ever they do the belt they replace the whole kit. So belt, tensioner, pulleys and pump. £549 is the quote so happy with that.

Full service ( inc all filters replaced) and belt changed - including tensioners completed. £518
