Time to SORN ?

Just got the MH through the MOT and thinking of sorning it until April.Only did just over a thousand miles this year and am not a winter camper.Hope it improves for 2021?
2 schools of thought on here about this..
Sorn and save a few quid or
Don't sorn and save your moho by being able to use it (even if only for day runs) and keep it in much better condition than sitting doing nothing
Personally I am in the latter group.

did mine end of September when the weather turned

I have SORN mine until next year, it’s left permanently plugged in and using the fridge and freezer as overflow From the house,
Will start her every couple of weeks and move it enough to stop flat spots on the tyres also leave the hand brake off just chock her,
As this pandemic is unlikely to be over before spring next year ( if we are lucky) its Better to save a few pounds
And SORN her,

Will Sorn ours when it go's into inside storage from the 1st of November it won't be out again until the end April 21when its due it's second Hab check .

We don't usually bother SORNing for long periods but have done so since March as not able to use it due to CV restrictions and having to stay at home with Romy; we just taxed it for one month so we could take Romy to the beach and give it a good run out. Rather than pay for the year and claim it back we just do a 12 month DD and then cancel it at the end of the month as its easier and doesn't cost much more. It's on SORN at present but will be taxed wef 1st November as it's going in later in the month for it's hab check.

Winter motorhoming is the best......all the screaming kids and mr magoo drivers are all tucked up in their 30 degree heated houses and all the nice locations are lovely to walk around and be in 👍

Will SORN ours again soon like I do every year since 2014 when it was new, the engine won't run again until April, the tyres won't turn again until April. I'll let you all know how well it goes/went in a few years 👍😁

Never sorned a vehicle. Never thought the few quid savings was worth the bother.
Doing our last trip from tomorrow. We will NOT sorn. Our van is stored a few miles from home, i will go occasionally to run it around the yard. However for 2 + months i wont be able to do that as we will be off to the Mid East to find the sun from 27th Nov (and to see our grandson)

Has anybody SORNed a vehicle which was not in UK.

I know the law.

If anyone wishes not to answer in open forum, please PM(conversation) to me.

Geoff

Leaving a vehicle standing for months is about the best way of wreaking it.
You have a Motorhome worth 10's of thousands why would you want to wreak it, pure madness.
If not using ours always take it for a good drive every few weeks to keep it in good condition.

Might as well SORN in at the end of November then, no point in paying for 2 months+ if its just gonna gather dust ... just give the dosh you save to your grandson!

Just SORN'd one of the bikes ( left the other one taxed though ) but as the van is parked on what is effectively a public road no choice but to leave the tax running
Mind you, was out in yesterday so at least it is getting a little bit of use

Spose in that case i should sorn our other 3 cars and Caddy small van and bike.?? Never done the calculations on saving. Grandson get's enough, don't want to spoil him (he lied)

just mot'd mine yesterday cant see me using it before next spring so will sorn and get 2 months back, can use the money to tax from march or april if weather and covid situation ok instead of waiting till weeks holiday in may

Why would your insurance be invalid if vehicle not taxed? It would only be invalid if you took it onto a public road whilst untaxed.

Well done again - you do work these things out :)

Just talked to my son who has worked for Carol Nash on the motorbike side of things for 3 years. He say's SORN a bike and the cover reduces to third party fire and theft and maybe dropping it if in garage or driveway.
Therefore i am assuming ditto for car/van. If that is the case and not proven other wise i wont be SORNing any time soon. Like my vehicles to be fully comp all the time.
Experts will be along shortly.

Don't understand it. Isn't your insurance invalid if the vehicle is not taxed?????
Believe there is a subtle differance between not being taxed and being sorn'ed.

If that is the case, and I am not saying for a minute it is not, then some may reconsider the advantage of sorn'ing.

I spoke to my insurers, Aegis via Advance, when I sorned my van during the initial lockdown. They confirmed in writing that it would not affect my insurance.
Maybe worth checking with individual insurance companies in case policies differ?
