Think I'm going to Join the National Trust

Sounds as if the woke agenda shoukd be extended in NT houses
More power to their elbow talking about exploitation of the poor by the filthy rich
I’d be very interested indeed to see explanations of how Icelandic or Viking or Moorish slave trade affected NT properties

Every stately home in the UK was probably built on the proceeds of exploitation of some poor wretch regardless of their country of origin.

We can’t change history 🤷‍♀️

We can't change what happened but we can change the way what happened is viewed. History is largely about the interpretation of the way things happened in the past rather than just the factual dates which lets face it on their own are pretty meaningless and boring. Thankfully the way history is taught these days I suspect reflects that in my day it was learn these dates for next week!

Absolutely!

It does annoy me slightly that some woke groups are so focused on the African slave trade that they totally ignore what happened on their own doorsteps and probably to their own ancestors.

I'd be very interested in learning the name of any country that at any time in it's past history didn't use slave in one form or another.

In my opinion, there were lots of our ancestors who were abused by rich land owners in this country too, forced to live in squalid conditions and paid a pittance in tokens which could only be redeemed in the company shop.

I wonder what the ratio is of black people taken as slaves and non black taken.

Now that would be interesting to know.

The condition of serfs in this country in mediaeval times was a form of slavery, and if you remember your school history there was the story of blond haired slaves in a Nordic slave-market “not Angles, but angels…..”
Btw The oldest known slave society was the Mesopotamian and Sumerian civilisations located in the Iran/Iraq region between 6000-2000BC
Nothing new under the sun…..😀

And still it continues. We call it modern slavery, but so much of it is going on right under our noses. Sadly always seems to be people of a similar background and culture to those they are enslaving. :(

Never been to Scotland, am I missing much? '\
I think what they are referring to is that membership of NT Scotland has reciprocal rights re NT England but is cheaper

True but does that mean we shouldn't say that it was wrong? Most countries also had no democracy and laws that were very draconian on petty theft and any blasphemy. Some people around the world still live in societies like that I think most of us would feel sorry for them and see them as still living in the past. I think most are critical of those regemes it does however strike me sometimes as odd that the ones most critical are often the ones also who in some ways would like our society to turn back that way!

I'm not so sure. I think people who lean towards the " woke" view tend to also be against exploitation of people on low wages and in favour of supporting groups who are seen by others as inferior. People who are against being " woke" generally seem more in favour of people being less protected from exploitation.

English?

Progressive or left-wing attitudes or practices, esp. those opposing social injustice or discrimination, that are viewed as doctrinaire, self-righteous, pernicious, or insincere. Hence: such attitudes or practices seen as constituting a collective social movement or agenda.

Firstly, is “woke” a word in any other language, besides English?
Secondly, where did that come from?

Just a quick Google search
Copied the “English ?” Inadvertently
Probably AI
Next one was Oxford dictionary

Woke used to be something you did in the morning after a good nights sleep as in 'I woke at 6:30'!

I assume the new meaning is 'not asleep'!

We have been members for years. There was some anger at AGM as they were still allowing or possibly not actively opposing fox hunting on Trust land. I think members' opinion has stopped that.

The wokeness might have been due to their campaign to make sites more diverse. Apparently some ethnic minorities are under represented at many Trust houses and parkland sites. I know quite a few of the ethnic majority that would never visit an NT site, whatever it was.

We tend to visit a Trust site when away. As we have a dog we check the 🐾 count! 😉 Graded 1 to 3.

Some of the smaller sites are tight for a 6m van and were impossible when we were 7.2m long.

Parking at Sheffield Park was a challenge. The signposted spaces seem to be in a dead end lane and clash with the bus stop. There were hardly cars so we squeezed into a car space.

Nah!
All the blokes wear checked skirts, chase a creature call haggis, have a problem saying "lake" and drink a strange liquid called 'iron brew'.
Haggis have evolved with one leg longer than the other to make them suitable for running around mountains and making them hard to catch.
but you can catch a haggis if you run the opposite way round, as then they fall off.

I never understand why people drive inwards. Much easier to leave if the space was reversed into.
Same with supermarket car parks and regardless of vehicle type.
far safer to reverse in, as there is less chance of hitting a vehicle or person in the space than there is when reversing out.

Too true, there has been slave trading for millenia, look at how the Romans, Egyptians built their empires, the Vikings too, so there has been slavery in this country. And no doubt there was slavery in Africa before whites ever went there.

We recently re-joined when away and with just two visits "saved" half of the membership. It als means we are more likely to call in for a short visit when we pass somewhere, that we would not do, if we were paying the normal admission everytime. And when we go to Scotland next month will also be visiting Scottish National Trust locations with our membership.

I was going to comment on the park "nose in " discussion but coming back to the thread it seems to have faded into oblivion and moved on. I'll just say that we are member of both the National Trust England and English Heritage and visited many on our motorhome tours but not so much since we sold the van. Still happy to pay the annual membership, age reduced for the NT, and support the cause.

I will say one thing for the NT. We turned up at Sutton Hoo earlier this year (a nice day in January IIRC) and Hilary could not find her membership card. They guided us to the membership office who looked us up on-line and admitted her. They also asked me if Hilary needed a replacement card that arrived in the post a few days later and went in with mine so I know where it is. I really expected to get charged entry for the missing card.

If you go to Glasgow, you wont understand a word anyone says to you until you start to catch the cadence, whereas in Edinburgh they wont understand you, unless you speak really posh…😂
Go to Aberdeen and nobody has a clue what anybody says

Australia ?
Apparently even the Aboriginals had a form of slavery... trading women.
