camping and caravanning since a kid. New to motorhomes
Am meant to collect my new (to me) van on Saturday and the dealer has emailed me today to say that some toe rags tried to steal vans off him last night. Mine being one of them :mad:

The door lock barrel and ignition barrel having been taken out. I presume they must have also taken them.

Whilst the lock barrel is easily replaced, the ignition barrel has to come from Italy, with a 2 to 3 week delivery.

Totally messed up my plans now and could also be very much out of pocket if I cant get away as planned on 8th June.

Have informed him I dont want a whole load of diferent keys neither.

I hope they can replace quicky for you, how frustrating just when you could see the collection day.

Hope so too Riverbankannie

its our first van too

The spare room if full of goodies waiting to be put in the van too :oops:

I would be tempted hto tell them to fit any key to get you on your trip, providing them replaced for a matching set on your return.
Exactly this.
When I picked up our new motorhome last year there was an issue with the fridge, wouldn't work except on hook up and I had already planned our first trip (outer hebrides) they offered the use of a small 12v coolbox until they could sort the work out for when we came back, I was more than happy with this as it meant still having a fantastic time away.

Is it the habitation door barrel or the cab door?
If the latter is it not the same key as the ignition?

I'm with you on that one take what you can and get it replaced when you get back, if not would travel insurance pay for any out of pocket loss ?

Have asked them. See what can be done. I suppose it also depends on whether the insurance would be valid if it’s not secure. Again see what is said

Not sure which one. I think it’s the cab door and ignition barrel.
Should be the same key. Expect to be replaced so that all the one key.

sorry meant for sites or bookings that you have made if the van is not available to you worth asking but lets hope you get some keys to get you away good luck

We had the same problem and we didn't notice until we were in France. We percevered for the whole 2 weeks until we noticed the dealer hadn't put the 30amp fuse into the slot where the 12v fridge operates while on the move.

Are you able to share the dealer as we are picking up our new Motorhome tomorrow.

Will they be matching the lock to the existing key/ecu, just wondering as the toe rags will still have their valid copy ?

No idea to be honest.

Mind you I live a good distance away and will be putting a private plate on it.

Very much doubt it. When my neighbour had their vehicle stolen and then found dumped in a field, it was held in a secure compound for three weeks until all the locks/keys could be replaced and the ECU re-coded.
It was stolen with keys. The little $*£ had gone into the house via the garden and back door while my neighbour was upstairs, taken the keys off of their hook, REPLACED THEM WITH SOME RANDOM KEYS so that the neighbour didn't notice an empty hook, and came back the following day to nick the vehicle while my neighbour was out. 🤬

A few of weeks ago we had a neighbour close to where I work ask if he could park his Swift Kontiki in our yard whilst he had some building work done. A couple of weeks later it was pinched in full view of our CCTV. It was very well organised gang and only took them a couple of minutes before driving off. It was 48 hours later that the owner discovered it was gone but was fortunately able to track where it was and called the police. They sent someone out (to a motorhome hire company😲) and it was just being driven back out with false plates on it. A lucky escape with minimal damage but a shot across the boughs and I've been thinking of upgrading my security precautions to keep the scumbags hands off it. 🤬

We have just had an attack.
One had a Growler and a Non starter, window was smashed that was it. The other one had no alarm was owned by a customer in storage and that one was taken. It took 23 minutes to cut two hardened steel padlocks, get through 2 massive gates, hot wire the van and it was done in Saturday evening at 9pm when still light. Got them on camera walking up the road without a care in the world!

Interesting. We had the exact same issue with our new one. Unfortunately the dealer wasn't quite as helping. Nearly a year on we are only just about to get a new fridge fitted. We did 4 months travelling without it and had to with use campsites with EHU for extend off grid periods with ice blocks. 3 days off was about max. What fridge was it? Ours is a Thetford. Thetford no use in trying to get it fixed.

Mine's a dometic one. Can't remember now what they said was wrong with it to be fair.

We have booked our new van (when it arrives) with a growler and non starter. I was wondering if it was worth the drive from County Durham to Devon. Clearly it is. Terrible thievery about!

Unreal isn’t it.

A very wise decision 👍👍👍

Someone was bemoaning their non-working fridge on a motorhome facebook group I'm on. That they were cancelling their trip, etc.

They hugely upset/offended that I suggested buying/borrowing a coolbox. I even offered to lend them mine.

Over 20-odd years of caravaning and motorhoming, things go wrong from time to time. I have some plastic sheet and sticky tape, a small toolbox and a credit card. If you're determined, there's usually a way of keeping going. I even had to hire a car on one holiday, and have a slightly longer than planned stay whilst a turbo was replaced.

We all have priorities but to cancel a trip due to a fridge seems a bit rash but then again how long were they going for ,where to ,do they have critical stuff to maintain a temperature (Medication) , my little fridge can be kept cold with the blue blocks , but you need to refreeze them. Reading some of the posts on here if we did not travel due to little niggly faults we would not be going anywhere , I have a campervan, don't expect full on luxury or all the comforts of home , A Motorhome maybe higher expectations and as for an RV it would be so inconvenient if the jacuzzi stopped working
