I read about a number of Solar Panels being taken from the top of vans during a recent Motorbike gathering while people were watching the racing, Snetterton I think.

Then on Monday I noticed one of my customers had a panel missing, when I asked him about it he said it had been taken, overnight, while the van was parked on the drive below an open bedroom window o_O

Anyone else heard similar stories, is this on the increase?

Cheers

There's a thread on here somewhere where someone has lost one

Yep can't rmbr who but he was at Knockhill race track when it happened and apparently not only his.

I'd never heard of panels going missing off MH's until recently, when I had a narrowboat I'd hear the odd story about panels going missing, I put that down to them being easy to get at on unattended boat.

I have to admit I do check that mine is still there regularly some on here said their insurance had gone up once it was fitted

Had a friend had one blow off in a road in France. could this have happened and not noticed?

Good luck getting mine off.

Nothing short of an angle grinder and time will get mine off. That or drilling about 20 rivets.

The mind boggles!

This is first time I hear about solar panels theft. Mine are bolted with torx, but they will need a ladder to. This got me worried now. I got to look into some security bolts.

Hi sorry to high jack your post but how much soler panel can I add to van 100watt on van now with victory 75/15 controller

Need to get a vanbitz bike loop on the roof around the panels I think🤔

You can add another 100w on the same controller. Anymore, you will need another controller.

Thanks that’s what I thought so if I put another 200watt of soler on what size controller do i need

Seems bizarre, solar isn't exactly expensive and theiving them looks like a lot of risk for not much gain.
But many things surprise me these days 🤷‍♂️
Incomprehensible?

Climb on roof, cut the cables (so next “user” will have to splice more cable on, cut through all the sikaflex and any bolts then make the escape…..all for something that brand new costs what….£150?

Whats the point ?

I'm off to Oulton park this weekend. I'd better keep a tight hold on the buggers!

;) ;) ;)

I had my 150w panel stolen during lockdown whilst on our storage site. Very tidy job, they must have used an edge cutter. As we were not allowed to visit the van for several months the two leisure batteries were completely flat and now are not holding charge as well as they were, more expense.

Presumably the storage site had no security then….or how could anybody get in and out with no problem?

I wouldn't have thought there is much value in a secondhand solar panel, not much of a market for them & not enough aluminium to make it worthwhile.
Do the toe rags think there are rare metals in them.

The storage site has 2 electronic gates plus cctv. All their security is geared to stop the theft of vans. Access can still be made via perimeter fencing with a ladder. It also could have been someone also storing on site, we tend to think that people with similar interests to you have the same moral values as you, but of course they don’t.

This is my thoughts, of all the things to lift a solar panel doesn’t spring to mind.

Now think about all those cats that could be liberated from a vehicle that has good ground clearance.

But worth a lot shipped abroad in bulk to poor countries. Used to be a serious problem here with the Moroccans taking them back.
