On another thread talking about EU roaming I mentioned I had gone with Tesco Mobile with a new IPhone 12 unlimited data bundle for £37PM. I liked the Tesco deal because they said that the deal applies to “home” countries which includes a long list of European countries including the likes of Albania.

Highly sceptical that there was a catch somewhere I reported the deal and said I would report back on results. To provide some protection I put a £30 additional spend buffer on the account Via the excellent App.

So, after a month travelling what are the results? Well, we have used 35gb data and yesterday I was blocked (currently in Southern Italy before moving on to Greece). I thought “here we go…some fair usage small print has caught us out“. Rang Tesco Mobile who said no, I have unlimited roaming data…all should be good. Remove the SIM card give it a clean and put back in. Hey presto back to lovely 4G data roaming.

So, we simply tethered phone up to the TV last night via the Nord VPN and watched James Bond (the last one) before we go off to the town one of the scenes was filmed in.

Perfect.

Great news (y) as I've just bought a SIM for a 3 week French trip next month (plus Unlimited UK data). Was the VPN just to allow tethering to the TV or do you require it the watch Iplayer, Netflix etc.. even though it was presumably activated in the UK?

i got the VPN on all or devices for 2 reasons, the first is security when using public and web Wi-Fi, the second is to access U.K. based TV Netflix, all the various terrestrial channels players etc. Not that we are watching much. Nord does charge BUT it does give coverage for 6 devices and works well on a global basis….some of the free ones are quite limited.

I've just returned from 2 1/2 months in France and Spain, Tesco mobile unlimited data sim worked pretty much flawlessly for the whole trip in my mifi device without a vpn, no fair usage messages even though it's supposed to be 2 months in every 4 and i am continuing to use it now I'm back in the UK.

I am using a Tesco PAYG 100Gig sim in my Mifi, just finished the first month in Spain using 95Gig, now on month 2. No problem getting Now TV, BT sport, BBC Iplayer etc and don't need a VPN

I assume you mean a 12 or 24 month contract sim? Or have you bought a 'Rocket pack' at £30?

It’s a £30 rocket pack, you lose what is not used in one month, but if you use it all before the month you can just get another one without waiting for the month

All,

We are headed off to Europe for three months from the beginning of Feb until first week of May. About 86 days if everything goes to plan. Probably just a few weeks in France, perhaps a couple of weeks in Portugal, with the majority of time in Spain.

Currently own iPhone on O2 with 150GB data, but obviously limited to 25GB fair usage in Europe. Also just informed by O2 that once we go passed 63 days we start getting charged for any calls, texts or data per min/gig.

So looking at alternative options. Currently have a Smarty unlimited gig SIM in our mifi router, but again that will be limited to 25GB. I found coverage here in the UK actually to have been quite poor especially in the Norfolk area. Looking to cancel and change. Seen Tesco, Lebara, IDMobile etc.

We’re looking for as large a data package as we can get for TV/streaming, web searching, face timing friends and family etc. Obviously looking at the Tesco/O2 package having found this thread. Can I just confirm that there is no data cap on the Tesco SIM’s in Europe? This thread would suggest no cap, but the Tesco website doesn’t specifically say. The 12 and 24 month packages talk about roaming for 2022 or Spring 2023, but not sure and a little confused.

Anyway, any info gratefully received. Don’t know if easier to buy a SIM in Europe?

I may be wrong but around June time or so, Tesco stopped the unlimited roaming in EU for new contracts from end of 2022.

I was considering one at the time and waited a bit too long.

There is a 25GB fair usage policy and I think may also have a£2 per day charge too. But not sure.

I ended up with an O2 which doesn’t have a daily charge but still a 25GB fair usage and use this on top of the two company contracts that we have with Vodafone.

Another vote for Tiekom!

We have 2 sims from them for over a year now, 300gb data for MIFI and a phone - calls, texts, mobile data.

Great value, no issues and Camini and the team are a delight to deal with.

Tesco now have a roaming cap. Best deal at the moment is Popit mobile 100 GB at £25 no roaming limit on data and able to use for 6 months roaming in EU.
Thanks both for the latest info. Shame re Tesco now limiting to 25GB too.

OK so Popit is looking good. Just looking at their £25 deal for 100GB.

Just looking at Tiekom now as well. (y)

Tesco still honour the original deal if you signed your contract before June until such time as you change your contract, I was lucky as I had been on a 30 day rolling contract and decided to save myself a few pounds and changed to a two year contract a few weeks before they announced the change.

Tesco advised me last month by text that as a new user (end 2022) my Pay monthly sims have EU roaming extended until May 23 and is under review for continuation or a daily rate.....

I’m using two 100Gb Popit SIMs in our mobiles (on our numbers) and a 300Gb Tiekom SIM. All works very well indeed. The Tiekom SIM is tied to Vofafone ES when in Spain (obviously) but you can manually roam to any network when outside of Spain, which is really useful. The Popit SIMs I can connect to any network throughout Europe Zone 1… good news all round really.

I got the last full roaming deal on June 15th it changed the next day

Yes I’m just reading your interesting post on the other thread at the mo re Tiekom 300GB per month. Looks good. As a result of this and the other thread, currently looking between Popit and Tiekom from the recommendations.

Just looking at the best way forward as have a Motorhome WiFi 5G router and an Apple TV box to watch Sky, BBC iPlayer, Netflix etc. Will obviously need internet for web searches, Google Maps, Sat Nav etc as well as trying reduce data requirement on phones which are on O2 SIM’s at the mo with their restrictions of 63 days roaming before real punitive charges kick in. We’ll be in Europe (mainly Spain, but France and Portugal as well) for just under 90 days.

To the uninitiated and inexperienced, will I need to use a VPN if I use Tiekom or Popit for UK based TV streaming services? Unless I purchase a Firestick and download onto that as don’t think there is a way for the Apple TV.

The joys of travelling to Europe in a MoHo for the first time and steep learning curve .. internet, best credit cards / how to get good exchange rates, where to stay .. and the list goes on ..

Need a vpn for Tiekom (Spanish), but not for Poppit (UK). We used Nord as we have a Firestick, & they do an app which makes connection very easy. Whatever you do, don’t be tempted by Lyca mobile, as despite advertising that you can use all your data in the EU, actually cut me off at 4GBs. The customer service is worse than useless (I’d go as far as to say obstructive), & I had to abandon Lyca for data in my phone for the whole trip. Helpfully they sent me a text message EVERY day to say welcome to Spain/France, & that I could use all my data allowance in the EU for no charge! Every day……..!

Oh dear re Lyca. Will stay away.

Thanks for info re VPN and Tiekom. Pity Popit don’t do anything bigger than 100GB.

I have a Tesco mobile contract taken out in 2021. For this contract my Unlimited Roaming in the EU is honoured until my contract runs out (2yrs) or I change my contract.

As a number have already said, new contracts will be restricted to the current Fair Use policy limit.

The info below from Tesco May be helpful

If you let the contract just expire and don't change it then current t&c's continue... some you keep your EU roaming...

I asked their CTO… they can’t get a bigger package from EE at the moment. They would like to offer more…👍🏻

You don't usually need a VPN using a UK sim,,I don't with ID or Vodaphone.BUSBY.

I tried streaming prime from France last year. Said I wasn't in the UK and stopped. A VPN connects to a UK server making it look like you are in the UK. I think Netflix was OK but I think others like iplayer, itv hub etc may not work ( can't recall if I tested them all). Also VPN secures your data connection at your device, usually made over standard WIFI or Internet so very secure. Some VPNS are free like privado, but limited to 10gb a month..
