We are leaving for a month in France next week and although we have felt the need for TV abroad before, because of all the Moto GP's and F1's while we are away I thought I'd see if I can receive French TV.
I have a modern 240V Samsung smart TV and a Vision plus aerial - do I just need to find a French transmitter?
Is it that simple?
How many channels should I expect?
Will they have motorsports?

Hi. On initial set up, do you not get a choice of country ? Mike

Sorry .... I know nothing about all the new TV stuff. My dad used to work for French TV transmission, but that was in the old times , when a storm could affect it all. At that time I could repair my neighbours' TV set most of the times... NOW ... It's just a big mystery to me. It's a bit like my old Max compared to new motorhomes mostly equiped with electronic , in the habitaion but mainly on the engine !
Edit: Usually the sports news are free on national channels.
TF1 ; France2; FR3; then you have all the TNT channels , free but I don't know if you can have them. @Welsh girl ... May be you could help here, we've been to specialised shops together

Providing there is a signal most modern tv's should be capable of picking up a digital signal, our last 3 tv,s have, if you poke around in the audio setting sometimes they transmit one of the audio channels in English.

How new is your tv ?

The french changed in the last couple of years from something to SECAM or from something to SECAM and my old tv couldn't tune in (only 3 or 4 years old)

The solution is to buy a new tv or a receiver. may I suggest giving consideration to buying it in france (as you may not know you don't need one) and consideration to one with an HD so you can record tv series on it and watch.

DARTY were very good to us

F1 is only broadcast on pay channel in France. Last year, we either found a bar showing it or listened to it on Radio 5 via the i player radio app. We needed to use a VPN to get round the BBC's policy of blocking live sports broadcast for listeners outside the UK.

As already mentioned no more SECAM HD only .
The Sat receiver that came with my French van has a TNT card and recives all FTA channels (astra 19.2°E)
Find a good wifi and use Kodi :)

Our avtex tv has always picked up French tv till last year when it would pick up the channels then come up with a message saying some element was missing.I was told that French TV had changed! So we have now bought a new Avtex with built in satellite receiver. We hav'nt been to France yet this year so we will see!!

Today I've been told by a French Xpat that they changed the TV signal to HD and instantly made upto 75% of French TV's scrap - they weren't happy.

Best start saving, it'll be happening in the UK soon enough....

you should be able to buy a cheap french HD decoder in the big supermarkets

Strangely enough, when we first arrived in France 2 weeks ago my Spanish tv picked up a lot of french channels but no English translated ones like we used to receive while in Spain for the winter.
Not sure why it now won't unless some region s in France has done this but not others as yet?
Now we get nothing at all, we have moved further north in France and are now near Poitiers. On researching the subject have read that a small box similar to the one we had to but when UK went digital is what we would have to buy to receive these channels in France but as we are going to be in France for just another 3 weeks we are not going to buy one and just use our satellite dish and receiver instead.

You will find no Motorsport on French TV channels appart the paid ones.
Best solution is WiFi or MiFi a LapTop or Tablet with a VPN / Smart DNS, and watch the English Chanel's either live or on Catch-up. Its what I do.
Pity that ITV 4 will not show MotoGP highlites now. Chanel 4 for F1, live or replay is ok.
For the French TV, you can sometimes select VO Version Origonal and often for U.K., USA films and TV series you can have the original English language. But mainly French TV is plenty of USA crime series!!
Good luck

Looking around here at the elaborate aerials on the house roofs I suspect you will need a very good one on your van to recieve terrestrial tv in France or be very lucky where you park.

We used to stay in gites in France pre-motorhome and quickly realised that most French TV is pretty c**p. Now travel happily without one - and so much less hassle with no faffing about with satellite dishes, etc. Really don't miss it. But each to his own.

Would you happen to know if this includes Le Mans? Last year it was on the TV in the hotel room, but I am taking the van this year and was going to buy a TV- if I cannot get it then I will not bother with the TV.

If French TV is anything like their crap radio then it will be a complete waste of time. :Eeek: I did think it might also be useful for the weather.

MotoGp highlights are going to be shown on Chanel 5 this year, I don't know which day:clap2:

They show a couple of hours of highlites from Le-Mans during the weekend, best is to listen to John Hindhough on Radio Lemans.
Will be there again this year from Wednesday, great few days.

That's great news, will keep a look out for that. Thanks. :)

I'm always amazed to see the so many people who can understand all our FRENCH programs , in french, and declare they are that bad! I presume you've watched them all, and of course this includes documentaries and science programs and reporters' investigations ones as well, plus all those I don't think of right now. I would never dare saying something like this about a foreign TV, spending only a little time in the country... especially during holidays while a lot of time is devoted to children so they don't get too bored!
I spent a whole year in GB , teaching there....hang on, the main thing was: who has shot JR? who is going to be the next french president and Roland Garros next winner..!Oh and on sunday mornings.... Walkies with Missus Woodsomething.wahoo ... Hooba hooba!!
