enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
No I don't need any pills, but would like a tablet thingy ma jig to read all the bloody magazines I've just signed up for !!!

I want one that I can read in the sun on the beach without squinting. Doesn't have to have a SIM card as it's not for phoning anyone but needs to be around a 10 inch screen size.

Any recommendations please ...?

Especially as Amazon prime day ends tonight!!

I take it you will download the Readly stuff from the WiFi at home or in van?
Kindle fire HD is nice my wife uses hers everywhere, not sure about the latest models hers is 2 years old

A 'normal' tablet screen is too reflective in bright light... and possibly too heavy for comfortable reading. Battery life is relatively poor

A Kindle is superb for reading even with a slightly smaller screen... but isn't very good at illustrations.

Agreed - the Kindle Paperwhite is like reading the printed page.

Kindle all the way for me, poor for illustrations as indicated above.

thenks for the responses, i note the comments re illustrations on a kindle (which is looking like it might be my best option), does that include the photographs that are in the magazines ?

can i access the interweb aswell on a kindle for browsing ie MH FUN lol so long as i have internet access?

whats the difference between a kindle and a kindle fire?

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite this year to replace my old Google Nexus which died terminally. It has a good screen although being a Samsung it is a bit quirky compared to the Google but as Google don't make affordable tablets any more it was a reasonable alternative.

A Kindle is designed for reading text and as suggested a Kindle Paperwhite is best for reading in the sun but it would be useless for magazines and wouldn't run them anyway - unless they were in the Kindle store.

A Kindle Fire is a sort of tablet but is heavily slanted towards Amazon products. I would check it can run the magazine app - it may not. They also come in versions with and without adverts. You want the latter which will cost slightly more.

so i couldnt download the magazines on the Readly App - which is the only reason i wanted it for !

A quick Google suggests the Readly App will run on a Kindle Fire as it is a tablet of sorts but it won't run AFAIK on something like a Kindle Paperwhite.

The kindle use E ink to display text this requires power only to change from one one character to another, tablets use a backlit screen, if the sun is shining on the screen it cancels out the backlit so you see nothing. kindles aren't backlit so don't suffer from this problem.

so, (question to anyone please) is the kindle fire ok for reading in the sun etc, or is it no better than any other tablet?

question has just been answered, thanks

so now i need to know will Readly run on a kindle paperwhite or similar reader?

anyone running android on a kobo reader? apparently also Tolino run on an android system - which would allow the Readly app to run ....???

Onyx Boos
Sony DPT etc are far too expensive

Kindle fire generally no good in bright sunshine. I'll look into Readly bit I don't think it will work on the Kindle Paperwhite.

Kindle Paperwhite is the only one you can read in the sun, in my experience! I don’t think it will use Readly, but you can use Kindle unlimited for magazine, & they do play. All other tablets are as bad in the sun, so you may as well get any one, as they will all be as bad as each other for what you want it for!

the Likebook Mars seems a good option, but the reviews are very mixed ......

There have been a few different Kindles I think the fire is a better screen and the Fire Hd is better still. Readly offer magazines which have lots of illustrations, which Dee says she can read them under a parasol but not in direct sunshine, the Kindle Paper is a white screen that would not render the colours in the mags.
internet connect is a given on Kindles as that is how you load any content( no SIM card)
generally if you are near a WiFi connection then you can download stuff for reading when you are away from WiFi, van!home etc.
hope this helps

I do Readly on a Fire HD10 tablet which is great and a bargain at present. Sometimes I use a Fire 8 inch tablet when travelling and that is OK but not quite so good. I recently bought a Samsung S6 lite thinking it would be better, mostly the display as I don't think the processor speed makes much difference with Readly, but the experience was no better so I sent it back. However the S6 lite is also good value with the ear buds in the current sale.

For reading books I use a regular Kindle but I can also read them fine on the Fire tablet, except outdoors.

Kindle name is used when we mean the tablet focused on book reading and is very good in all light (I hear - I never owned one).
Kindle Fire is a more regular tablet that has an Amazon version of Android OS. The display is the usual glass type screen and can have more glare / get washed out by the sun. YMMV on how useful a Fire tablet is for reading. The Fire tablet is well integrated into the Prime family of media products.

My wife has an older generation 8" Fire HD - it was mostly for reading but is used for other things.
I bought a current generation Fire 10 HD for streaming media in the Motorhome. It's great for that.

A Fire Tablet is generally a great simple tablet.
We can easily read Kindle books on our Fire HD tablets. Full brightness is needed out in the sun.
But if it's bright outside we're usually more active & don't read.

Just to complicate matters... Amazon do a Kindle Unlimited subscription £7.99 /mth.

Admittedly its mainly for books, but they claim they have 1000's of magazines...
If you have a Kindle... might be worth taking advantage of their 3 month free trial?

just pulled the trigger on a Likebook Mars ......

but the one i bought is an updated brand new version with up to date OS - hopefully it will be what i am looking for .....

if not, does anyone want an e reader ..... LOL

No

well my e reader arrived. its a Likebook MARS

just started to play with it and downloaded and installed the Readly App - which was why i chose this reader as it has a browser facility and play store on it

i wasnt sure it would actually work to do what i want BUT

it does !!! Readly downloads easy enough and although the pages take a second or so load when turning to the next page it is what i expected, it displays in black and white (also as i expected) but the photos and pictures are really clear (although in 'greyscale' (i assume) and its easy to read in bright sunlight (its sunny here in essex today!)

it wasnt cheap for a reader and i could have got a tablet for around the same price, but for me i wanted something i could read in the sun when on holiday etc as i get bored easily just sitting round and dont read many books (though that might change ...) but i do like a good magazine i can trawl through !

Think of the Kindle Paperwhite as a paperback book, you can read it anywhere but illustrations are B&W. If you read a lot, like I do (several books a week) then unlimited is a good deal, allows you to ‘borrow’ up to 10 books at a time. I have the 3G version that gives free access to the amazon web site so you can download books wherever you are in the world without having to find Wi-fi. I’ve used it in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, China and Europe.
