My factory fitted reversing camera is activated when i select reverse gear, like most of them i guess. What would i need to do to get it to stay on permanently ? ie so we can keep an eye on the trailer we tow (makes sure i won't forget it's there...).

Cheers

Depends what system it is. Our factory fit pioneer thing, just go into settings and change camera view to on....its then on all the time if needed. Best rear view mirror I’ve ever had .....

Disconnect the monitor trigger lead from the reversing light circuit and connect to +12v.

Check the settings on the monitor first as some can be set for +12v or ground triggering. The norm is to trigger on +12v.

Ours was fitted by Vanbitz and if I recall correctly, it's a Dometic system.

The monitor and integrated camera are activated when the ignition is turned on, so we can see all of the time - and very handy it is too.

I'm not sure if there are settings for the system to be only activated when reverse gear is engaged, but we prefer it as it is in any case.

I’ve also got a vanbitz system and have a switch to turn in on permanently, but only for manoeuvring. It’s very handy but the vehicles reversing lights stay on, so you would be unable to drive with it.

Wired mine up to the leisure battery and a switch where I can reach it when driving. As my monitor fits over the original rear view mirror position I usually have it on all the time, it’s just like looking into a rear view mirror in a car but without any heads being in the way.

OK that was what i was looking for. Will have a look at it this weekend. So basically it's being permanently earthed ? and therefore will stay on when powered up.

Normally need to be connected to a +12v to stay permantly on.

I think I over complicated my reply because I run my cameras through my Clarion stero and you can select either 12 v or ground for switching.

OK makes sense, i was thinking about the "parking brake" wire scenario that is required on many infotainment systems to allow access to certain settings and if not connected to a park brake wire in the vehicle then grounding it is an alternative.

Getting better month by month.
As mine is run through the Head Unit, you can programme the buttons separately. Short Press on "Tel" button to use phone mode or press and hold for Reverse camera perm on. Separate CMOS switch to change view of camera.
