Morning everyone and happy new year to you all, following on from a thread yesterday, we are looking to do Scotland's SW300 at Easter, hopefully starting at Dumfries and going clockwise, got a leisurely 8 days to complete it and would welcome any hints, tips or advice. any detours that anyone can recommend would be welcome as well. Thank you

Hi lorger, usually we just go away for weekends so campsites as a rule, but looking to be a bit more adventures, I'm assuming there's plenty of wild camping to be had, so will try to take advantage of that. but in all honesty not fussed either way

also, love looking round little towns and villages, but also enjoy plenty of walking. goes without saying that finding a pub is quite high on the list as well!!

We did it a couple of years ago. Don't miss the Galloway Forrest, plenty of good wild camping spots. There's also a good campsite (Glentrool) although it's under different ownership to when we were there.

If you use searchforsites have a look on there as a few Aire style stopovers have popped up over the last year or two.
A good first night would be the quay at Glencaple which allows vans to stay overnight, village has a hotel/pub used to do really good pub food but a bit of a hit or miss now, they also have the Boathouse cafe which is superb. You also have castle corner about 1.5mile away and you have lovely walks from there but no pub, nice walk to Caerlaverock castle.

I will give you more ideas later as I’m just heading out.

Thanks again lorger perfect local knowledge

Did the southern section late last year. Ilse of Whithorn, Steam Packet Inn lovely food, you can stay in the field just round the corner but it's a bit of a slope. Portpatrick, nice food in Conner's, can recommend Sands of Luce campsite, biggish site with statics but fantastic facilities and right on the beach. Mull of Galloway, lovely food in the café by the lighthouse and bracing walks along the cliff tops. Drive the A712 The Queen's Way through the Galloway Forest Park, lovely and there looked to be a few wild spots but can't confirm as we didn't stay.

Thank you Bonsaiman, perfect info👍

Caerlaverock Castle Corner is closed at the moment for refurbishment. Re-opening 1st March.
Kirkcudbright is a nice small town with a harbour. You can stay overnight on the harbour car park. Pubs near. Or the swimming pool has water, waste, & EHU(4 I think).

Portpatrick is a lovely harbour village but they don’t like overnight parking, which is a shame as there are a couple of nice pubs. If you like seafood, the Crown is good.

On the road to the Mull of Galloway is New England Bay where there is a large beach side car park where overnighting is allowed and has public loos and an Elsan.

A few miles away is Port Logan. The car park has public loos but no pub.

Moffat is a nice town. Has a CCC site and a CMC CL. The A701 north passes the Devil’s Beeftub. You could take that then the A72 to the A702 south through Biggar to Abington, then the B road to Leadhills and Wanlockhead.

Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland. Has a lead mining museum. The drive South from there to Dumfries is beautiful.

Check out the Forest and Land Scotland website nearer the time to see if they are doing their Park the Night scheme this year.

There's a C&MC site (if you're a member) at Garlieston.
The superb wardens that had been there for 8-9 years finished last year but believe their replacements are good as well.
Pub with good food and beer couple of hundred yards away.
Bus stop about 50 yards away.
No shop close by but bus takes you into Newton Stewart (Potty territory ) where there's Aldi \ Sainsburys \ Co-op \ etc
Good walks along shoreline, etc.
Good beach if you've got a dog.
Fish and chip van usually there on a Friday night.

Head up the A77 a little and jump on thre Calmac to Arran from Ardrossen, is nice

Looks like the above replies have saved me typing :) all the above suggestions are great. All I would add is just come and enjoy our beautiful region, if you're sensible you'll not be stuck for somewhere to stay and we have loads to see.

It has been for me, maybe if you explain ? it would make better sense.
Prices for motorhomes to increase as they can no longer get the RTE rate. Problems galore with all Scottish ferries. Google Scottish ferries Problems. You will get enough hits to keep you busy all day.

The last few miles of road to the Mull of Galloway are single track.
it is but good view ahead and plenty of passing places. We have gone there a couple of times and always been able to park. cafe with good food and you can see the marks/dip where the Viking moved their boat overland to avoid the rough seas. We took some friends there on a windy day and it was the highlight of their visit.

Port Logan parking - you can walk to their pool which is interesting and has feeding of the fish shows, lovely beach. You can park overnight on the front in Stranraer and walk into town (very close) for shopping or a meal/takeaway.

Thank you so much for all your replies, given us plenty of places to look out for and visit. very much appreciated

Don't forget motorhomes can no longer join the standby queues at Calmac ports. You must have a booking. Even if the standby queue is empty you are not allowed to wait. What will happen when all traffic is loaded and there is still space on the boat (which regularly happens) I don't know. Maybe you can form your own standby queue and then "jump on" at the last minute? I'm on that ferry almost every week for work and it's a shambles.
