Is it illegal or legal or worth putting a sticker on the back of your motorhome with van dimensions on L,W,H and weight.

Twice I’ve been stop by police for going narrow lanes and weight limits I thought it might help them or am I being naive.

I can’t see how it would help the police.

If you’re going down lanes narrow enough for them to stop you then having the width of your MH written on the back won’t change anything... you just need to stop going down unsuitable roads.

Likewise with the weights... don’t go down roads with weight limits unsuitable for your vehicle.

I think that they would not take a blind bit of notice of a sticker with your vans dimensions on L,W,H and weight as being evidence and being correct as you could falsify the figures.

V5 and converters plate is what they would want to see.

I think if you are over 3m high you should have the height displayed in the cab with the letters/numbers at least 1½ inches high, so theold bill might look for that. Otherwise regarding the weight the police will insist on the log book even if you have it prominently tattooed somewhere. '\

You can pretty much put whatever stickers you wish on the back of your motorhome, as long as they’re not offensive. There is nothing in law that covers what you are suggesting displaying, but I agree with other’s comments, such a sticker is pointless.

It’s not a bad idea, having the height displayed for the driver, but as far as I recollect, it’s only ‘legally’ required in commercial vehicles. It made sense, as a company driver might be regularly jumping in to different height vehicles.

I have a laminated card behind my sun visor, with all dimensions, weights etc, but nothing displayed permanently and my height with roof rack is 3.1 metres and 3.36 metres with the kayak on the roof.

I used to think that but Is it though?

OMG ?..... I hope I’m not breaking the laws that I upheld for so long ?

I’ll do some digging, but at first glance at the link you provided, it reads that it does apply to all vehicles.

Is that the police back home or where you are now?

If the road doesn't have a restricted limit sign I cant imagine why UK Police would stop you , as you are not breaking the law. Any where else , its anybodies guess .

Interesting (if I'm reading it correctly) that the height displayed must not exceed the travelling height by more that 150mm.

Why would anyone say their height was greater than it really was?

I’ve dug as far as my limited resources allow and the verdict is that everyday continues to be a school day.

I’ve looked at a few bits of legislation, where this applies across the board and not just to commercial vehicles and drivers.

I wonder how many motorhome owners/drivers have stuff on their vans that like me, take them over 3 metres and don’t have the 40mm high warning displayed, in feet and inches, risking a £50 fixed penalty (from DVSA prosecution guidelines)

I like the idea.
I have just put a few stickers on the back of mine.

Thinking about putting them on the front for speed cameras as well just to query any fines I get in the post.

Nearly forgot the "I have only had half a glass of wine" sticker

I have one similar to Lorryman’s but didn’t realise that they are compulsory. Must measure the size of the writing on it.

Interesting, One would assume, that the Importer/Dealer/First Owner. Would have been aware of this regulation?. I like many, would have assumed that it applied to GOODS carrying vehicles only.? I had them on My R-V`s. Over 7.5t. But not on the current vehicle, of which I must admit I have as yet not Checked the overall height

I’m quite happy to have my highest height displayed, which is the one with my kayak on the roof, but if I take the kayak off, because of the rule that you can’t display a height that is greater than 6” more than the actual height, I would have to change my cab sticker, or have a second sticker displaying the height of my empty rack (which is also over 3m).

I’ve decided to rebel, they can stick their stickers ?
