Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Can it be roof mounted and then forget about? I wouldn’t want to have to fuss with removing/turning it and could it be used for say May in Europe ,August in the UK and then again October in the UK?
Can I sugest the Starlink mini.

Compact and easy to use. Requires less power. You just point to clear sky, it is better not to mount as if you are parked under a tree you can place mini on the floor nearby.

Also consider buying in France as much cheaper. Also register in France (We use a Campsite address we go to occasionally) again much cheaper around £36per month and you can still use in uk for 2 months.

That's what we do the process is further back in this thread.

What happens if you use it for more than two months in the UK?

Wifi calling works as long as your phone has Internet regardless of what WiFi you are connected too but it is carrier dependant as not all support it.
My phone does not even show a setting for WiFi calling when I take the SIM out, and if I try to make a call without the SIM it just says that I am not registered on any mobile network.

My conclusion from this is that, as you say, it does depend on your phone being registered to a mobile network, and the network being one that supports WiFi calling. I guess the fact that the SIM is installed and the phone thereby registered to your SIM provider gives the wifi calling facility the information it needs to route the call appropriately over the Internet, even when you are not connected to the mobile network due to lack of signal.

This means you can only really test this in a location with no mobile signal, so not possible for me at my current location.

.

Does Starlink support WiFi calling to allow you to use a phone as normal in areas of no 4g reception (assuming the phone supports it, of course)?
I guess you could use WhatsApp instead if calling someone you have in your contacts and who also uses WhatsApp.

Well this is the dilemma. So far I've not heard of anyone being cut off doing it this way and going over 60 days use. Remember if you don't use it on a particular day that is not included in the 60.

Personally I have a French registered and my old gen2 Now registered in Spain. But I don't use much in the uk so both paused and no charge. But could have 4 months use at £60 per month if needed. We do make WhatsApp calls no problem.

If you don’t have a SIM card how will the network know where you are and what your number is ;)

I’m not saying Wi-Fi calls cannot be made without a sim as this is just a VOIP call but identifying information needs to be sent and received plus walk away from your Wi-Fi whilst in a call it will swap that call to the Cellular network.

My conclusion was slightly different - yes the phone needs to be registered on a network so that wifi calling knows what your number is, but you also need a SIM inserted for this to be true. If there is no SIM this information is not available to the phone, so wifi calling is not even offered as an option. Hence without a SIM wifi calls cannot be made using your normal phone dialer and phone number.

You can of course make calls over wifi using other VOIP apps like WhatsApp but unlike wifi calling, these will not appear as normal phone calls to the recipient.

Yes as long as your provider supports it.I use it at home where I usually have no mobile signal indoors.
but don't seem to have WiFi calling on my Samsung phone.
It will not be shown in the connections list unless your provider offers it.

Yes,as above.it only shows when your provider offers it.

Reading what you have written I am agreeing with you, a sim identifies the phone otherwise how does the network know where to send and receive a call. An app or VOIP software may work but no sim no mobile identity

some of us have already modified our gen 2's to operate on DC only as thats where we use them, away from 240v supplies .... mine can operate from a 20Ah lithium for a few hours, making it truly portable,

perhaps the next mod would be to try to get the battery inside the casing, with a small charger, not sure what would i need though, as i dont have the technical knowledge of some of you in Funster Land, but i am pretty good at having daft ideas ?

Bad news this morning on the French and Spanish registered Starlinks.

Prices increased to €89 or around £74. Still worth the change though as £22 per month is better in my pocket.

Question is has the uk price increased again?

Is it worth posting as a separate/new thread on the forum ?

Has anyone purchased Starlink off Instagram ad at £47 ? This add has popped up on my feed 3 times in 2 weeks, it seems too good to be true or is Musk so desperate ?😜

I got the email today for my German registered account. However, they have credited my account with €51. The email is a bit ambiguous in that it says prices increase today and all new accounts start the higher rate today but credit has been applied which shall be debited from next payment. I assume the €51 is a 3 month credit ( 3 x €17) due to a 3 month notice period of price increases. Still not a bad deal provided I keep dodging the 60 days rule.

I suspect a U.K. price increase won’t be far behind

No credit on my account which is registered in Spain :(

Perhaps it’s something to do with German law. When the last price increased it was 3 months before it was implemented in Germany.

The monthly service price of "Roam Unlimited" is increasing to 89 € starting today.

As a current customer, you will receive a service credit equal to the difference in price, which will be applied towards your next invoice. For new customers, the price increase is effective immediately.

This was my Spanish one. It does say a service credit for existing but not for how long

As above, my understanding is 3 months, €52 credit = 3 x €17 increase = €51 credit. The €51 shall be deducted from next payment. Therefore next month shall be €89 - €52 =€37.00 after that it’s €89 a month. Wonder how many will cancel after the reduced month

It’s almost like a ‘let’s screw the customer’ approach to the relationship! I guess they are celebrating hitting 4 million users with some additional margin for them… 🤬

Well, the monthly service price has increased by 50% in less than 6 months, which is quite a steep rise! The pricing structure is not reliable because tomorrow they might decide to raise it to 189, leaving me uncertain about what the future holds.

Yesterday, Starlink mini was sold at 149 in Spain, but today it suddenly increased to 299 and it was 399 just few months before. I don’t like unpredictable behavior from my internet service provider. I have a fixed monthly budget!

I can’t imagine my home fiber internet service or mobile phone service suddenly going up by 50%.

Guess what? Those contracts can be canceled at any moment too, so Starlink’s marketing about their “no contract” feature is just marketing fluff, allowing them to play with prices at will.
That’s what happens when there’s no competition!

There will be a limit to it price wise. But as we have the French/spanish price and not the uk £96 we will continue with it.
We are leaving for another 3 month trip end of August to France Spain Portugal. So around £220 for Starlink for the trip that gives me excellent internet the whole trip and no chasing sims.

With mostly free camping aires we will recover that cost easily.

We only need it for travelling in the van and if it was required for the whole year I may then consider alternatives

The practical limit today is probably around the U.S. pricing, which is $165 (145 euro or 120 pounds)

I have to agree with Randomstop's observation.

Investing hundreds of pounds in hardware that can exclusively be used by a single operator who can double their prices on a whim doesn't appeal to me, although I fully accept that the technology is good and the service works well.

At least with LTE routers the various competing SIM providers help keep the pricing sensible from the consumer's point of view.

Had this last night. My unit has been paused since last year when they put the prices up and tbh not really missed it in 11 weeks away so I reckon it's time has come for us to part.

Yes, I got it too looks like another back door charge. Elon needs to boost his Tesla stock price. Glad I never bought the second back up dish when they were reduced in Spain. This puts a further obstacle in the way of those getting around the 60 days with 2 dishes.
