We have a pair of Spitfires, occasionally three, that fly right over the house several times every Saturday and Sunday. Never tire of looking up at the evocative wing shape. I just wish they would give the Merlins the beans. I know they are now venerable, but it was designed to cruise at 250mph and flown hard, not pootle round the sky at 110 mph

A while back, the Polish bloke next door grinned and said "We flew them too!" I agreed and said Britain and Poland had been allies and friends for many years.

Interesting story that the RAF thought the Polish pilots needed some combat training, until a training flight was 'jumped' by the Luftwaffe. The immediate action of the Polish pilots demonstrated to the RAF that they had underestimates the flying skills and daring of the Poles.

Frequent sight of Spitfires here in Bognor. Flying over from Goodwood. Never tire of watching them.

I thought it was meant to be quiet around there

I have been in them at Conningsby and the lancaster, my wife climbed into the rear gunners post at the back talk about being vulnerable, my son was based there for a couple of years and we had a private tour around with the s/leader it was amazing to see how many merlin engines that were in cradles having been refurbished the blue spit was in there and a dc3 and a 2 seat eurofighter

When I lived near Goodwood use to have thr Spitfire fly over 2-3 times a week as there is a few based on the airfield.

You can tell a Spit flying over without even having to look up😁😁
A nice day at the Witterings is always made better by the regular display of a local spitfire. Always makes you think

No surprise there. In 1939 the Poles had been flying very obsolete P11s & P7s against German Bf 109s in 1939, but still put down 285 Luftwaffe planes. In 1940, they used the crappy French Caudron & not slow MS 406. When Britain gave them the Hurricane it must have seemed a joy compared to the sluggish, under-gunned French planes.

We see and hear it two to three times a day at this time of year. Iconic sound. Don’t need to look up to know what it is.
£2750 for a 30 minute flight.
Think I’ll stick to watching it from my garden.

Where approximately is Jim's place please?!

Cheers James

I read that one of their combat techniques was to fly straight 'head on' at opponents.

That picture of the Lancaster reminded me of a time I had to marshall one onto the pad at Hurn airport. Thought I had done a great job waving my arms while being very aware of those four props coming towards me. Then I realised I was watching the bomb aimer, the pilot could not have seen me over the nose for the last fifty feet.

Was at the Kent county show a few years ago a spitfire buzzed the crowd a couple of times then went away doing a roll could understand that the noise must have been terrifying during the war

Just walked back from Bognor town and a spitfire and another (not sure what) were chasing each other in and. out of the clouds

A lone Apache helicopter flew by other day and quite low quite impressive.

Surprised they're up. The cloud base is fairly low. Was at the BoB 75th Anniversary at Goodwood in 2015. They had about two dozen Spitfires, a few Hurricanes and a Blenheim there.
