Vehicle: Fiat Ducato 2.8 JTD, year 2000 (ie the pre-facelift model, with the older gearbox where reverse is right and down, next to 4th). It's a left-hand drive model.

Problem is that the Speedo cable has started rubbing/squeaking. Only sometimes and only a light rubbing/squeak, but over the past 500kms it's becoming gradually more regularly present.

We've had the van for about 6 years now, and the Speedo needle has always wobbled quite substantially......very much at low speeds, and less so as speed increases until it's almost steady at about 110kms per hour.

Questions.......is it possible to detatch the cable at the instrument panel end and lubricate it a little?
How much other stuff needs doing in order to get at the joint?
Is it possible/easy to self-fit a replacement cable?

Any advice/tips would be much appreciated!

It's possible on any speedo I've been involved with. Detach it from the speedo head then remove the inner cable. Look for a polished area (indicating a kink or sharp bend in the outer), broken strands, and corrosion. Once you're happy with in coat it very lightly with a Moly-based grease leaving the upper 100mm grease free then replace. You may have to rotate it to ensure the gearbox end engages. Using a light coat of grease and leaving the last 100mm grease-free will ensure grease doesn't creep into the speedo itself.
