Can anyone confirm that there is no change to speed limits when towing if your van is over 3.05t unladen.
My van is 4.25t and I will now be towing but the .gov.uk site doesn’t mention any special speed limits for towing.

If over 3.5 ton its max speed limit without a trailer is 60mph...with a trailer its still 60 but recommended to lower it 50mph.

When towing a trailer on a dual carriageway or motorway, 60mph is the maximum speed you should be travelling at. And, on any other type of road (as long as a lower speed limit isn't in force), you should stick to a maximum speed of 50mph.11 Jan 2018

On a motorway the maximum speed is 70 it says. It is not a Goods vehicle so those rules don’t apply.

Those limits apply to any vehicle including cars that are towing a trailer of any sort.

From the gov website.
Cars, motorcycles, car-derived vans and dual-purpose vehicles when towing caravans or trailers
30 (48)50 (80)60 (96)60 (96)

Motorhomes or motor caravans (more than 3.05 tonnes maximum unladen weight)30 (48)50 (80)60 (96)70 (112)

Therefore it appears a 4.25t motorhome can do 70 on a motorway even when towing.

One certain way to find out...... Do 70mpg on a motorway while towing and see how many tickets you get.

I’d rather not thank you.
any volunteers to test the theory😂

If you go to Road traffic Reg Act 1984 (amended) Sch 6 Part 1 Item 3 Motorcaravan towing trailer
motorway is 60 D/C is 60 other road is 50

Its true! You cannot do 70 mph whilst towing at any time over 3500kgs. Dont care what the Gov site says! Ask a copper!
If you want to try it...stick your foot to the boards and see how far you get ! We have had 4500kgs trucks for a while. The limit has always been sated that what ever the figure is...deduct 10mph! If you have a trailer on the back............all the very best and I just hope you dont have a puncture on the truck or the back trailer/toad/caravan/call it what you like!
When was the last time you saw a truck with a trailer doing 70? You dont...why ? Cause its illegal! That is why they are restricted to 60mph max!

I have been overtaken by a car towing a caravan at about 100mph. That was in France and some time ago

Im guessing here but.............was it legal?I dont think!! lol
This was years ago and the first time it happened I could not believe it. This is one of the reasons for all the Clampdown on speeding and drink driving in France in the last few years

Absolutely none in my experience. Move to Lane 3 though and it's a different matter .......😏

You really shouldn't be allowed out.

When I asked tow bars to tow cars & lnb leisure they both said less 10mph, obviously not on a 30 or 40mph Road

Its easy same as the LGV's whatever you are towing and no lane three so always 10mph less in a 50, 60 or 70 zone

Seems to have caused a discussion. I was just Trying to establish the legal position and it appears the .gov.uk website is misleading and the regulation is actually 60 on motorways.
I didn’t intend driving at 70 when towing, just trying to establish what the law was and the conclusion is .... we don’t really know!!

What’s it like toeing a Toyota Aygo
Its treated as a trailer so same rules apply, not a great problem in the UK as unless in lane three won't draw attention to it but abroad have speed cameras that look at the size not class of the vehicle hence the phrase * Je suis un camping car classe deux* at toll booths on auto routes and the strobe effect of Spanish speed cameras going off mind you you are only supposed to do 90kph in a m/home in Spain

Is that why you can’t have a toad in Spain? Lnb said there kit is legal there as classed as a trailer.

You should I referred to the actual legislation , its there for everyone to read it . :) The gov website doesnt help as they have not quoted the vehicles verbatim as specified in the legislation . accuracy is everything when it comes to the law . HTSH

IT has always been, 60mph Maximum. On any UK road, when TOWING anything. (and before the pedants get going, yes , "unless other speed restrictions apply")

Having said that. back in the 70`s, on track days, We had Cars towing Caravans at speeds in excess of 80mph without any issues. And: At that time it was legal in Germany to tow at speeds above 70 mph on the Autobahn,
