I have a Peugeot Boxer Base motorhome and although it is 4 years old, I have never used the spare key. Until today,TIA when I find that it will turn over the engine but will not fire. The handbook tells me that in some clever way, the vehicle needs to recognise the key which it apparently is not doing. A visit to the Peugeot dealer results in a quote in excess of £110 to re-program the key.

I suggested that since it appeared that the key was probably faulty from new they could allow some discretion about treating it as a warranty job elicited two interesting comments :-

1. Even if the fault had been reported immediately after delivery, it would not fall within the scope of the warranty which only covers the remote locking system
2. These keys can 'lose their memory' if not used regularly, a fact not mentioned in the handbook.

Any comments or, particularly, suggestions for a cheaper way of resolving the problem?

TIA

If it’s a long time since you’ve used it does the battery need changing..

There's 3 types of key:
-Full remote key, which includes an immobiliser transponder
-Key without remote, but still with a transponder. These DON'T need a battery and should start the vehicle.
-Traditional key (without a transponder). These open doors but won't start the engine.

To me it sounds like you have an immobiliser issue. Sometimes it can take several attempts before a key that's not been used for a while to re-sync with the immobiliser, so fully remove it from the barrel and reinsert a few times.

Try holding the spare key underneath the wheel about 55 mm down against the plastic cover. And using the other key turn ign on wait 2 mins then start it. Turnoff the try with spare. A pic may help identify which key you have. One of the spares with ours only unlocks the doors but wont start it. It should have one key with three buttons, one key that will lock unlock and start and one just unlocks the van.

Timpsons may be able to re program the key if you take them both in with the log books and driving licence/

Oh isn't technology wonderful! I picked up a new (to me) MH and drove it 500 yds down the road to fill it with fuel. When I got back in, it wouldn't start!! Turned out I had used the spare key that hadn't yet been coded!!!

What is the point of providing keys which only do half a job.
I'm sure it would cost pennies to program all keys while on the production line.

I have to periodically use the second key in order to keep it charged (Ford transit) both keys are identical.

Phew just collected a new spare key and used it straight away to make sure it worked. It had been done properly and there was no problem. Feel more relieved to know that we have two of all the hab and ignition keys.

Timpson's wouldn't be my first port of call, far too expensive, try a local locksmith.

Just an update on my original post.

More in hope than expectation, I passed this query on to Peugeot Customer Care. They seem not to have agreed with the dealer's advice about the extent of the warranty and the need to use the spare key frequently to preserve the memory and have agreed to pay for the spare key to be (re)programmed.

If you don't ask, you don't get.
