In the local Herald Express April 21 there is an article about the local District Council allowing Motorhomes to stay overnight for up to 2 nights. It is a trial period for 12 months and allows Motorhomes to stay at a cost of £15 per night in one of 9 designated car parks.
The car parks are :
Leonard’s CP, Ivybridge. ( useful for those transiting to Cornwall).
Quay CP (Southern area only). Kings ridge.
Cattle market CP Kingsbridge.
Pound well Meadow overflow CP Modbury.
Long marsh CP Totnes.
Park & Ride CP Dartmouth.
Memorial CP Slapton ( subject to parish council approval).
Torcross Tank CP, Torcross.
North Sands CP, Salcombe.
There are no facilities but some will have public toilets.
Usual conditions apply : no awnings, campfires , BBQ’s or generators.
All subject to ratification by the Executive.

Sounds good👍
I’m sure lots will feel that is too expensive for a CP with no facilities, but, having said that, for us, it’s a welcome addition and gives choice, and for us, car parks can be close to the town where you want to be, where some sites are miles from anywhere.
We have just stayed on the Wall Park site in Brixham for £15pn which was excellent, so, you pays your money and make your choice.
The fact MH’s are being thought about must be a real bonus👍

According to Devon Live it's only the last three on the list at £15 - the remainder will be £10 - Unless that has changed.

Below copied from the Devon Live article:-

“They have amazing views so it is exceptional to charge £15 a night here as £5 extra is worth it for the view and location. We need to give it 12 months to see how it goes. There is a hang up about what they will do wrong, but proper motorhome users do respect the area.”

Leader of the council, Cllr Judy Pearce, added: “The purpose to deal with the motorhome problem we had last summer and to welcome them into the area so they will spend and benefit local businesses.”

The nine car parks selected as suitable locations for overnight stays are:

– Leonards Car Park, Ivybridge (£10)

– Quay Car Park (southern area only), Kingsbridge (£10)

– Cattlemarket Car Park, Kingsbridge (£10)

– Poundwell Meadow Overflow Car Park, Modbury (£10)

– Longmarsh Car Park, Totnes (£10)

– Park & Ride Car Park, Dartmouth (£10)

– Memorial Car Park, Slapton (£15)

– Torcross Tank Car Park (restricted to coach bays only), Torcross (£15)

– North Sands Car Park, Salcombe (£15)

Subject to the statutory 21 day public consultation, the scheme will be operated as a pilot for up to 12 months, to allow review of the success of the policy and to evaluate whether the policy should either cease, continue, or expand to provide additional facilities.

Brilliant news! Let’s hope it‘s a success, and other councils follow suit. (y)

Thanks for the update on prices.
Same newspaper, same date, letters :
“Make Motorhomes welcome - and reap the benefits”.
If we ALL wrote in the same vein, to ALL District Councils AND local newspapers, then it may help sway the thinking about Motorhomers. Emphasise the local economic benefits to both Councils via charges and businesses.

The Quay CP in Kingsbridge has loos. The Cattlemarket is a bit sloping but not too bad at the top. The Memorial CP at Slapton is level but the loos are at Strete Gate CP which is about a km away.

The Tank CP at Torcross is a very short stagger from the pub. :)

The Salcombe one is interesting but the route to it won't be obvious to visitors. Don't go through the town but take the wiggly steep road you will find on the map which avoids the town centre. Do NOT attempt to reach it from the South Sands direction! It will be rammed in summer but out of season should be quieter. I can't remember the loo situation there.

I for one, am quite happy to be described as: “ tighter than a ducks 🦆 bottom”, but I think £10 or £15 represents good value, considering the locations and proximity to town centres ( in some cases).

It's a fiver in North Devon. Why would you pay more for a view when you'd be asleep?
If you were a Devonian, as I am, you wouldn’t need to ask the question 😂🤣
I might add I’m born & bred Southb Devon most commonly described as : “God’s county on Earth “. 😊👍

The last three do have excellent views - that ruling now effective ?

And from another (South) Devon boy, I'd say its worth the extra to avoid the North Devon Link Road, (I do love Croyde and Saunton tho)!!

I lived there for 20 years , a view is a view is a view. I stop at places to sleep.

True. Why they ever allowed the tivvy to Barnstaple section to be single lane with shared overtaking originally defies belief. I use the old road usually up to South Molton

Let's hope more Councils do the same and provide overnight parking for MH - will help stop unlawful parking and upsetting residents.
£10 sounds more reasonable to sleep in carpark, as you will still have to pay your day time fee

I agree but it is step in the right direction. Who knows, if all funsters were to draw their local councils attention to what East Devon and South Hams councils are doing , it might make them rethink their policies with regard to short term / overnight stays?
Only when EVERYONE writes to their councils & local newspapers, will this have a chance of happening.

If they are near the town centre and you do nt have to pay for a bus or taxi it good

Haven't seen the herald recently, does it say from when this may happen?

It is subject to ratification once the Council executive have reviewed the proposals which usually is 21 days.

The Council have just put out this email: (I haven't watched the YouTube video but it would be interesting to hear from anyone who has the time to do this to see if the reasons why 4 car parks were dropped are given. )

Good Afternoon

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to our consultation on our pilot motorhome strategy. We have received over 700 responses to the consultation, which closed on Thursday 20th of May. As you know, the consultation was to decide whether to proceed with a 12-month pilot scheme to allow self-contained motorhomes to stay at nine South Hams car parks.

After listening to some public concern about four of the proposed locations, these recommendations have now been removed from the pilot scheme. These are: North Sands in Salcombe, Memorial in Slapton and Torcross Tank in Torcross and Quay Car Park in Kingsbridge will all no longer be considered for the trial. The suggested £15 tariff has now been removed along with these sites.

In light of the responses, we will be bringing a different set of recommendations to the Executive to consider. The revised recommdations will only include the following car parks within the pilot scheme and a single overnight tariff of £10.00 will apply:

· Longmarsh Car Park, Totnes
· Leonards Road Car Park, Ivybridge
· Poundwell Meadow Car Park, Modbury
· Park & Ride Car Park, Dartmouth
· Cattlemarket Car Park, Kingsbridge

The results of the public consultation and a report recommending the revised list of recommended sites will now be discussed at the District Council’s Executive Committee on Thursday 27th of May.

You can watch the meeting live on the Council’s YouTube Channel here: www.youtube.com/user/SouthHamsCouncil the meeting starts at 9:30 a.m.

Kind Regards

Parking Team

Edit: I've had a look for the video but so far have only found this one, the discussions starts at 43:15 on this link - but this is the earlier meeting which recommended the proposal, not the one where they struck out some car parks. That must be more recent. What was interesting is it seems there is a lot of support in this Council meeting. I suspect the latest video hasn't been published yet.

I thought this was a good idea for these M/H parking bays, but I wasn't surprised with the outcome, as I go to Salcombe & areas about 4/5 time a year & you have a job finding a parking space for a car let alone a M/H.

The Dartmouth car park may be a useful option for when Domestic Management wants to perform her annual pilgrimage down there. Unfortunately, the location will remind us of what was lost when the Little Cotton site ceased operating.

We were at Totnes last week and signs at Long Marsh carpark state no sleeping overnight. Hope this happens.

If it's £10 or £15 overnight how much is it per day if you do decide to stay 2 nights?

Agreed. Titus A Duxass :dance2:

The Council voted unanimously on Thursday to proceed with the 12 month trial of the 5 car parks listed in my post (#22) above.

I don't have a date when this will come into force but I guess they will need to have new signage made. Hopefully it will be this year. :)

DBK I believe I saw a new sign posted on another MoHo site so it may be that some are in place already?
