We’re off to the continent for a few weeks in both August and October and are thinking of taking a spare toilet cassette with us.

But, where to store the full one. We have a PVC with all the storage inside. Does anyone store their yet to be emptied cassette inside the van with them or is it just too smelly, too risky or just too unthinkable?

Toilet thread, what else can one do but get involved....:moon2:

I carry a spare cassette but have never used (yet). I have a garage so not such an issue.

I guess a good sized strong bin bag and a car air freshener inside would be an idea.

Add an extra dose of thetfords or whatever you use before removing full cassette.

Just a few early morning thoughts.

We have carried a spare cassette for years but only had to use it once, when our expected dump point was out of action.
On that occasion the full one travelled in the fiamma box on the bike rack as that mh had no garage.

There was a thread not so long back and one clever Funster showed the smart shelf they have built under their van, that holds the spare cassette either empty or full.

Use the search and hopefully you’ll find it.

Here you go, look at #24 and you’ll see it in the photos.

Going to France I wouldn’t bother with a second cassette, the Aires are all over and you will always find a dumping point.
We took ours with us last time mainly because it was packed in but wouldn’t bother normally!

Agree with those who say don’t bother. Been in France for last 5 weeks and no shortage of free places to empty. Getting cassette fluid is another thing though so bring plenty.

No problems in Europe. Loads of emptying points. Search Park4Night app.

The OP Lizbiebrowne did not specify countries just 'the continent', but if it is countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, one cassette should be fine. Maybe the intended countries could be listed.

Remember one can empty when passing a MH service point, whether on an Aire or there are some at service stations. It does not have to be at one's night-time destination.

Surprised to see also the most motorway service stops in Italy have drive over service points.
Seen some in Belgium also.

Nice to have another toilet thread, thankyou.

Dont worry about it,there are lots of emptying places, follow your nose. ;)

Full cassettes are heavy and awkward, there is no way that I would store one onside my PVC!
We eke out the space in the cassette by using a spray bottle of diluted pink instead of the flush. No need to add more water just to have to carry it away to empty.

Changed our diluted pink to Tesco everyday shower spray. Swmbo reckons the pink stains eventually. Good thing is that you can use for its proper purpose too.

Hmm 🤔 I don’t think I’d wash my hair in the cassette, that’d probably smell a little bit 🙄😇🤣

Thing to do is empty it at every opportunity, don't wait till it's full, a lot of motorway services have emptying places, as well as Aires.
And while you are at it always keep your water full as well.

Don't do what I did.

Take a quick pee in car park yesterday.

Bowl emptying that's odd as the flaps shut.

Top and bottom of portaloo weren't sealed!!

Pee over van floor.

Quick thinking, grabbed a pillow and stuffed it whee the wee was. Cleaned up with barhroom spray.

Pillow washed but ruined ball inside cover!

Oh well!!🤣🤣🤣

And the countries are…….? ;)

Thanks everyone for your replies. It’s reassuring to hear that there shouldn’t be any problem just carrying a single cassette. This will be our first time abroad with the van and, as always with the first time, many aspects are not clear at the present.

On the particular topic of whether a full cassette can be safely carried in the van, it seems that no one does. So perhaps we will not take a chance on trying that option on this trip (and I don’t believe there’s enough room under our PVC to store a cassette underneath).

Have fun, you will be fine
