Does anyone have any knowledge of solar panel farms ? we have 9 or 10 acres and have given a thought too having panels. The fields are grazed by sheep at the moment so that could continue after the instalation. I used to think that you could catch a cold at the end of the panels life but i see they do have a secondhand value and not a negative value.

Any thoughts ?

Two main issues.

Planning consent

Connection to the grid. This can be a big issue and many projects for wind and solar are on long term hold waiting for national grid infrastructure.

You'd probably be well above the power generation to count as domestic. So you'd probably have to negotiate a commercial contract to get paid for your kWh that you squirt into the grid.

Planing not so much, but grid connection maybe not even up to scratch to support additional generation. Unless grid upgrades are done.
The DNO will say yes, as long as you pay for the upgrade to take your generation.

This suggests 10 acres is the economic lower limit... Although that might have shifted.

I believe that you can just rent out your fields to a solar farm company around £1000 an acre.

They are going to build one in the field next to us. They have just started moving equipment onto the field. However, expect a very, very long job before its up and running. We were first notified about the intention to build one 6-7 years ago. Planning applications not only for the solar farm, but the underground cable to connect it to the nearest point of the National Grid, which is only a couple of miles away. Incidentally there were no objections to the planning applications.

It so usefull asking a wide range of people with varied experiences and views, rather than just searching google as you dont know from what biast an artical is written.

Maybe talk to Octopus to see what their requirements are in respect of size, kit etc, and obviously what will they pay you for the power generated.
