Packing the van ready for our planned trip, hoping to get up to the Artic Circle I'll only be using the main routes , do I need snow chains? A necessity? or an option? or Overkill?

TIA

Gerry

The use of snow chains is not permitted in Norway after about Easter time - see linked page.
Most people use winter tyres but in May you should be ok as the average termperature in the north is around 2°c.
Main roads or not, they do not clear snow but tend to drive on it but I think you will be ok in May.
It should be lovely, if chilly!

If you are over 3500kg there are extra requirements

Wierd, for the summer you are not allowed to use snow chains but if over 3500 kg you have to carry snow chains all year.

When we were in Norway in May the snow was as high as the van

Good job you were not stopped then !

Use beyond the mandatory period
The vehicle must have winter tyres (studded or non-studded), chains or similar also outside of the periods mentioned above if this is necessary in order to ensure sufficient road grip. If snow or ice can be expected on the roads, the vehicle must carry chains regardless of the time of year.

Unless you claim you didn’t expect it :D

We will be in Norway middle of May so am 4200KG do i need snow chains i have all seasons tyres fitted. If I am reading this correctly i will need snow chains.

That link states

"For vehicles and trailers to vehicles that each have a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg, winter tyres are mandatory in the period from 15 November to 31 March. This does not apply to motorhomes with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg, but not exceeding 7,500 kg"
