Totally lost on all this
I bought a 2016 van on a ford chassis. . It has a euro 5 engine but the V5 has no emissions data recorded on it..
I was thinking I might not have as much road tax to pay but as has been covered I have to pay the full 200 and odd pounds..
I never gave it any more thought but I'll read this thread a few times and try and get some understanding. ..
Andy.

I thought the first year carried an additional one off premium as well as the £310 for the next 3 years ?
So did I but apparently not in the first year, I assume because of the cost of registering it as well as the tax ...

Re-reading the above the extra £310 a year is for the following 5 years from the end of the first year, so it would be £310 for years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 = £1550, not just years 2, 3, 4 and 5 = £1240, this is on top of the annual tax of £140, so for the first 6 years the total road fund licence would be £2390!!! :confused: An average of £398 a year! :eek:

for vehicles caught by the new VED rules - the new VED has yr1 punitive CO2 emission based VED - so likely somewhere between £800- £2000 yr 1 VED dependant on actual CO2 emissions.
then £140/yr from yr 2 thereafter. Yrs 2-6 are also subject to a £310 “luxury” tax if >£40k, so total VED for yrs 2-6 is £450/yr.
in Yr 7, VED will drop to £140 thereafter.
Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 21.28.56.png

so the VED for a 171-190g/km CO2 car >£40k for first 6 years is £800+(5x450)=£3050 (or £508.33/yr):(

The point as I see it is this :

Two 2010 Euro 4 Moho's / campers are identical in every way APART from plated weight, 1 weighs 3.5t & is taxed at £235, the other weighs, even theoretically, 3.55t due to a paper exercise uprate, & is taxed at £165 - that anomaly can't be right i.m.o.
True but as I benefit from the £165 PHGV Tate on the MH, I am stung with the £295 for my Discovery that does about 2000 miles a year.
No sense with any of it but IMV for new MH's it can only be a good thing.

Tax band M
Tax - first 12 months £2,000.00
Tax - Standard rate £140.00
For cars with a list price over £40,000 a supplement of £310.00 per year applies for five years, from year two, and is paid in addition to the standard rate.

New Fiat Ducato Euro 6 2.0-litre engine CO2 emissions all fall into the 150-170 g/km category:

115hp = 157g/km
130hp = 161g/km
150hp = 165g/km
180hp = 165g/km
With this in mind assuming the CO2 emissions are given on the V5C the road tax would appear to be:

Year 1: £500
Years 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6: £450 (£140 + £310)
Year 7: £140

If no CO2 is given it would be the same as the 'old' system, ie:

up to 3500kg = PLGV: £230
over 3500kg = PHGV: £165

my fiat COC has a mixed cycle CO2 emission of 177g/km stated for my 2.3l Multijet 2 150hp 2017 Euro6 comfortmatic gearbox PVC with 16” wheels.
CO2 emissions are now calculated on induvidual vehicle builds - e.g. different wheels, body shapes etc all give rise to different emissions.
(e.g. a saloon has a different CO2 fig (due to drag) than an estate, different wheels affect CO2 emissions etc)
there was no CO2 fig recorded on the Globecar CoC, so it was registered as a PLG

Somehow I can see this new system being 'overahauled' in a year or two as it'll prove to be so ruddy confusing not to mention that it will hit higher value car/vehicle sales badly and people will hang on to older less 'env friendly' vehicles for longer, totally opposite to what is needed to 'clean up' the air quality ... madness.

I would do the same but pulling the 3.5t trailer might make a Morris Minor cough a little so stuck with the Disco
