Firstly what is the correct sealant to use?

Secondly what tool is the best way to dig out the old sealant

Thanks for the forthcoming posts!

as MikeD has posted Sikaflex but its not the easiest of sealants to use, so you need to apply it with the minimum need to "after work"!

clean off old stuff with any stiff plastic scraper type tool.
www.sika.co.uk you can obtain downloads for the Sikaflex range that include advice on removal. ... The only way to remove cured sikaflex adhesive is by mechanical scraping.

I wouldn’t use silicon, mikeD’s advise above is sound.

Getting old sealant out is a pain in the arris, patience and a selection of scrapers is about all that you can use (plastic scrapers probably safer) take care not to do further damage.

Masking tape when using sealants can save a lot of cleaning up and produce a more aesthetic finish if you’re a bit ham fisted.

If sealing trim, remove the trim first. Easier to clean up and the sealant goes where it should.
Have you considered changing the van?
