As much as I’d love to see premiums come down for over 70s, it’s all based on risk.

What we need are mandatory eye tests and reaction tests in order to renew your license after 70 (or even before). That would bring down premiums if we took some high risk people off the road.

I think this is a daft one.

Insurance should be purely based on mathematically calculated risk.

I was also angry with the fact that gender is now not allowed to be considered.

Men get cheaper premiums due to gender not being considered as men have more expensive crashes. This risk premium is now spread across both men and women which is not fair to women.

Gromett - as a female having been in the midst of fighting for equality here there and wherever all my working life - it's an unavoidable cross I have had to bear along with the equal pay & conditions that I enjoyed.

There's usually some downside or another that happens as a consequence - always was, so be careful what you personally choose to support and what you don't!

On that thinking, those over 70 who hold a C1 licence, and therefore have medicals at least every 3 years should already be rated lower.

Do insurers ever ask about categories of licence held/

No but maybe they should. Does C1 medical test reaction times?

Insurance companies should not be legally exempt from treating older people less favourably, without having to justify age discrimination. That is the point.

If they can justify (say) refusing to provide a car insurance quote (or an outrageously high F-off quote indicating they don't want the business) for a driver purely based on age, then they should be open about it and provide the data they are relying on. Arbitrary age bands of 70+ and 80+ are intrinsically unfair to older drivers who aren't impaired and have a good claims-free record.

Vehicle insurance is compulsory so this really matters. When (or if) you get to 80 and find you are refused a quote you will see this type of arbitrary age discrimination very differently. It will really hurt if you feel you are still a safe driver but are forced to give up driving.

The irony is that Equalities legislation has forced the insurers to rate men and women the same, because sex discrimination cannot lawfully be justified. It's the same Act that this Petition is all about. Hey, feminists wanted equality and they got it.

I am always careful as to what I sign, hence my explanation of why I couldn't support it.

I agree with Gromett here. The premiums are higher for a reason and it isn’t because over 70’s are safer drivers.

You wouldn’t sign a petition to make your premiums dearer to help my teenage son have cheaper insurance while making yours dearer would you?

This whole business of rating the insured according to the criteria discussed above disappears when it is the vehicle that is insured, as in many countries, and not the driver. Although it is common for vehicle insurance to exclude cover for drivers under the age of 25.

Many insurance companies, and their re-insurers, operate in countries having the two methods.

I wonder how this came about?

I'd say anyone less than 70 should set up an opposing petition to avoid paying higher premiums so that older riskier drivers can pay less

Signed...but won't do any good.
Like all other retail services they can charge what they want, or even refuse, of any customer regardless of age, creed, colour or sex.
