Hi Funsters,
Just had word from ‘Promote Shetland’ that the campsites on Shetland are open so the big question is do we book the ferry from Aberdeen sooner rather than later, when the weather will only get worse ?
It will mean driving from Todmorden ( in Eid lockdown) through Scotland to get the ferry and return, what do you think?

If you are in a local lockdown area, are you allowed out? Should you potentially be spreading it about into other communities, especially an area that is as isolated as the Shetlands, and therefore low risk except from outsiders. Yes the islands may be open for tourism, and no doubt they want them, but with that is a level of caution.

With regard to weather I would have expected earlier rather than later. By September weather can be expected to become rougher (windier) which would limit enjoyment of both ferry crossings, but just also ability to look around the islands once you are there.

Years ago stayed in hotel in Unst courtesy of my employers, would love to take my wife there with the motorhome but no way I would pay North link ferries the price they want for a return trip !!
I can fly from Aberdeen, rent a car and stay in a B & B for less !
So we are going there in October for a week !!

I have considered that route in the past because I am not good on boats, but the cost of taking my photo gear ( large telephoto lens etc. Would make it very expensive, plus waking up in the motorhome close to an Otter holt on the coast or at a marina is the best feeling ever.😍

Isn't there a friends and family discount. Someone on here was moving to Shetland.
Looked at the cost and it was circa £700 for van, wife and dog - ouch
