Not understanding how the steadies on my 20 year old Hymer work, I’ve always been nervous using them in case they wouldn’t retract so I took one off today to have a closer look. I’m not much the wiser now as they looked a closed unit. Is there anything I can do to service them?

Oil or wd 40 ...No need to worry ! Check for cracks and stuff but really ....Its all simple stuff . Just soak and refit job done! ;)(y)

If you turn that hex bar enough times, they should come apart and you could put some grease on the thread and up onto the bevel gears in the top section, but if they are easy enough to turn and you say you've never really used them, then they're probably fine.

I used to just spray inside mine with white grease.

Yes, I remembered I sprayed them last year with the same, I saw the white residue when I took them off yesterday. I might extend them on the bench and do the same.

I’ve already got one off but I might try that with the other one.
