Hello all you clever people. I have a 1TB Seagate backup plus portable drive which I have loaded quite a lot of music onto thinking I could connect it through the USB cable and listen to it through the cab radio ( 2018 Ducacto ) but it will not read it. I wonder if it is because the Seagate is is USB 3.0 and the radio will not read it or because I need to run the Seagate through another machine first. I would be gratefull for sensible replies, please not political replies or you shouldnt do that during lockdown etc :giggle:

Thanks

Roger

Could be the USB 3 or possible the USB output on the stereo is not man enough to power the hard drive, try powering it with a separate supply.

Thats a good point, Just had a look and there is no other way of connecting other than the one USB on the Seagate.

Transfer it across to a USB Stick, it works on the Sony radio in our van.

Actual spinny hard disks require serious power. Power that is rarely available from a USB port. I'd transfer onto something a bit more 21st century. A 1TB USB stick can be had for around £25. Although another issue is that an older device might have a maximum size of device that it can read.

It also depends on the age. Some older USB ports only support smaller capacity USB Sticks. Some will only do 32 gb or 64gb. - so try smaller sticks as well.

Just a thought..... We have a Kenwood radio in the van and to play music via USB from my tablet I needed to download the Kenwood music play app. It was such a faff I deleted it and now use the phono out to the aux in, works a treat. It's unlikely your radio wil have the necessary software to navigate across the spinny disc.

As Old Codger and Mcardle55 say, my money would be on the disc capacity exceeding the media centre capability.
Our TV's spec says it'll support up to 1Tb HDD but it actually runs up to 2Tb without an external power supply however it won't run a 4Tb with, or without, an external power supply.

Another consideration is what format the HDD is formatted in. A 1TB HDD is a different format to a 32GB thumbdrive. Most radios can't read extended formats
