I would love to go to Scotland, but, we keep hearing about the midges...... we have looked on 'You Tube' and there are some horrendous scenes....... can anyone say what would be the best time and possibly area to avoid these things.

Thanks in advance

They tend to be more prevalent in the west.

Apri/May can be a good time as well as September. It is a little weather dependent as well.

Lenny, , like us, probably still has the scars. Keep on the East Coast until September then take your chances.

It all depends on the weather. If its windy, very sunny or raining you don't see them that much. The west coast is worst but we are usually quite lucky with them at Millport and thats in June.

We are in the middle of the Galloway forest tonight and one or two have appeared. But not bad atm

We've been on the west side, mostly on Skye the last 2+ weeks and there haven't been many - too windy for them probably :ROFLMAO:

Currently 22nd May and I have not came across any yet
They are due out soon though
95% of the time they are not a problem but are evil if you hit the wrong place at the wrong time.

they get everywhere, and I was still finding dead uns weeks later.

never again for me, I notice the STA never mentioned them when promoting the places..

Maybe all the whingebags that hate motorhomes doing the NC should promote the midgies even more to keep us away.
Well i say us...I wont be going back.

Such a shame, some lovely places ,

June to August are the worst months. Tend to be worse in west. They love still damp weather and shade. If it’s sunny/windy you should be ok. Dawn and dusk are worse.

Staying away from rivers, trees and lochs helps, the midgi are devious little c#£&s, there defo hatch in late spring when weather gets warm but don't like really hot sun or heavy rain.......but love to hunt after some rain if it's warm.........full Burka needed then:LOL:

She can't come out she's got covid:giggle:

Just got back today from same spot. Likewise, one or two have appeared in Raiders Road Park-up. So if it stays warm they are about to make their move.

The little midges do little shits.
We had to abandon a holiday a few years ago stopping there due to midges , was horrendous.

Most of the time they are not a big deal to "most people".
Wrong place at wrong time and they can be evil

We did the NC500 in August, fair weather, light winds and not a mozzi in sight. We took those sexy mesh hats, but they never came out. Took all sorts of insect repellent and a flame thrower, P4 explosives 🧨 and dynamite but never used any of them.

I had heard the stories and how grim it would be, but honestly, it was great. Just go and enjoy yourself 👍🏻

We did the nc500 a week or so before nooa few years ago and escaped just in time. We had a few on the last night

Only ever been bothered by them when being chased through the Heather.... or trying to do naughty fishing at water sides in dark places!

We returned from outer Hebrides and west coast 8 days ago. No midges at all. Probably too early in the year for the vile things. We did camp up at Keilder Water a few years ago and were eaten alive by vast swarms of them. They managed to get through either the fly screens or fridge vents. Horrible creatures.

We were hit with them badly on the West Coast and Glen Coe one year but never saw a single one once we went island hopping in the Outer Hebrides. Not certain but I believe the islands are relatively midge free at most times barring the odd still day in certain areas.

First ones for us were end March this year in D&G!
Having said that been getting eaten alive in Devon and Cornwall during the last 3 weeks.
