Hi, newbie here, hope someone can help with Satellite Tv. We are in Spain, and seem to have a problem with our TV sound, can get a picture but no sound. Also can anyone tell me if UK tv is available with a satellite dish. Many thanks

How big is your dish?

You have to have a 80cm dish, and a decoder for Intelsat, I got my setup from Jackson’s Sattelites, and it works a treat all over Spain.

Hi Kim,

UK tv is available in Spain however it's not quite that simple.
Astra 2 which transmits UK tv is made up of three satellites all transmitting a UK and European beam. The majority of the free to air channels (including BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5) are transmitted from the UK spot beams which, on an 85cm Autoskew dish system, will stretch down as far as Narbonne/Carcasonne just north of the Pyrenees. Anywhere from there down to around Taragona is a black spot and you won't get the spot beam signal at all.
Once you get to Taragona you come into a side lobe of that signal and down the east coast of Spain as far as Cartegena it is possible to receive these channels again however it can't be guaranteed due to how frail the signal is in that area. Unfortunately the rest of Spain and Portugal is a no for BBC/ITV etc on Astra 2 however the European beams of Astra 2 cover most of Spain and Portugal if not all and certain channels will also work in northern Morocco. Free to air stations available are limited however with only the likes on Challenge TV and Pick TV working as well as most News channels and a few music channels but at least you can get something.

Some people use their Sky subscriptions in these areas to receive the encrypted services which will give a much larger range of channels (still not BBC/ITV etc though) or the BBC sat back services on Intelsat 907 however it is worth noting the following:

1, Your Sky subscription (should you have one) is not for use abroad so taking that with you is a breach of Sky's terms of service and they will cut you off if they are made aware.
2, The BBC sat back channels are an encrypted service so you require a receiver capable of illegally breaking that encryption and if caught could be prosecuted.

Not saying don't do either but it's worth knowing the risks before you decide what to do.
