I bought exactly the same components from eBay at a fraction of the cost and it works really well for internet use and streaming. All you need is a Huawei 5577, which is the 4G Mifi with external aerial sockets and a MiMo puck type aerial to put on the roof. I paid £50 for the Mifi and £22 for the aerial

some providers allow you to put a phone sim in a Mifi, but most don't. You can also use your phone as a hotspot for streaming and internet if in a good signal area
I have looked at Installing a 4G WIFI aerial on the roof but with the roll out of 5G now going to wait and see if current equipment needs to replaced once the roll out is completed

This is interesting as we always lose sat signal once we are in to Spain. I am ignorant regarding the streaming options, so please help me understand. If I get a dongle to plug into the TV, do I still have to have some kind of subscription (Amazon, Virgin,Sky) or can I get Freesat.

Another numpty question while Ive got your attention. If in Spain we search for channels on say Astra 2. It will show that it has found dozens of channels, but our Avtex TV does not show anything new in the list. What's occuring there then?

Keith

Hi Keith,

On a Satellite system you will always lose the spot beam when entering Spain as the northern area is a black spot for the UK spot beam however you should still receive the Pan European beam and I have a list of free to air channels on their if you would like a copy.
If you have a minimum 85cm dish with Autoskew it's quite possible that you will get the spot beam back from Tarragona down to Carteghena as you will be in the side lobe of the spot beam in that are however it's very weak so there are a lot of variants that can make or break the signal and therefore I cannot guarantee it.

Hi you can plug in an AMAZON Fire Stick into your TV and stream UK TV, other streaming device's are available,
Phil

It's worth noting that the Amazon fire stick is NOT going to give you your regular UK TV services. Amazon prime is a streaming platform and has it's own content including some live TV transmissions however not BBC and the like. You can download things like the iPlayer and ITV hub etc however as I have stated before you will need a VPN of some sort in order to trick these apps into thinking that you are in the UK.

Another thing that was maybe missed from my earlier posts is that with 5G it's going to be a long time before it's "rolled out" so to speak to the extent seen with 3G or 4G. The problem with 5G is that it is currently broadcast via a higher frequency meaning that, while incredibly fast, it will not travel as far from the antenna transmitting it and 3G/4G. In fact you need to be within 3 miles of an antenna in order to get it currently so aside from City's it is very unlikely that you will even receive it at all. It is being tested on lower frequencies so may improve at some time in the future but currently there's no definitive talk on when.

In my opinion it will be many years before 5g has the same coverage as what is currently available. The 5g signal has much shorter range and requires many more transmitters so now is only available in city centres where it's easy to fit to lamp posts and traffic lights etc that are already in place. To roll this out throughout the country (ies) along the roads will take many years and requires a big investment. As 3 and 4g will be supported going forward you need to decide what are your requirements now. I currently have no plans to wait for 5g as even good 3g speeds are suitable for streaming radio and video so anything faster is a bonus - you only need to look at a studio clock when the news is on the see the timeslip. 5g will transform our lives if we want it and allow faster downloading but there won't be much improvement to streaming live TV, although there will be more options, as in a good signal area it's already instant.
It's worth mentioning Mores Law. This predicts that computing power will double every 2 years while the cost will halve and that's been proved correct with the falling cost of data.

rather than drill through the roof and guess the best position, I mounted my 3g/4g Mimo aerial on a bracket. this enables me to put it out through an open skylight. the tiny coax cables allow the skylight to close fully. the mifi is then sat on the overcab bed with a usb lead running to the nearest 12v socket

5g infrastructure outside major towns and cities is years away still

It's not true about live UKTV. We got off the ferry at Santander first time using it and from the closest aire watched the BBC Strictly final live streamed on our television through the Firestick without a VPN because our kit is UK registered, and we've used it ever since with absolutely no problems. Through the Firestick we can access BBC iPlayer, itv hub and all other UK based channels, and, we watched the approaching Tour de France while at the top of the Alps d'Huez last year. The only service not available from the BBC is local news and current affairs.

Hi Sillious
Is correct you do not need a VPN to watch UK TV, I watched to MOTO GP and Match of DAY While in Spain via Virgin TV GO APP on my Fire Stick, as for 5G, it is being roll out now how do I know its part of my Job to provide the backbone links

Ok so considering that the iPlayer (just to keep things simple) needs a UK IP address in order to allow access then can someone please explain how you are managing to do this using a setup abroad without either using a VPN or altering DNS server settings??
I am aware that some mobile providers with take you through their IP when using their data which could be a possible explanation but if Brexit does go through on January 31st then prepare for that to stop. The EU has already stated that brits will not be able to access iPlayer or Netflix in Europe if and when we leave so I assume that there will be new rules for mobile operators. Any input on what that will mean??

You don't need a VPN if using a UK SIM for any of the UK TV catch up apps.

A few weeks ago I was in Portugal and using a Portuguese NoS SIM which gave unlimited data, Amazon Prime worked fine but for iPlayer I had no problem using a free VPN.

Hi
My MIFI router keeps it's UK IP Address when ROAMNG in Europe don,t how it does it just does I do not have to change any DNS settings, like is said what will happen when we leave the EU we don't know

Lenny not everyone is clued up on this stuff so my aim is always to assist members which is why I'm asking. Plus one of the things I stated was that post Jan 31st if we leave the EU the UK mobile providers may not be able to run things as they currently do so things may change.
You say you use a free VPN which, in my experience have always been a nightmare with regards to connection and speed, which do you use??

Most mobile providers have said no change after leaving EU.

Been using Vpnify, only one I found won't run with it is Quest.

Thanks for the info on the VPN.

With regards to roaming I'm very sceptical though. All providers have said they "have no plans" to bring roaming charges back but they're hardly gonna say yeah, we're gonna charge you a fortune are they?

This BBC article puts it quite well............

So this is how my setup works. I have WiFi in the van using a 3 data card registered in the UK. We have 2 mobile phones registered in the UK with 40gb each on roam like home. We unplug the Firestick from the lounge TV at home and take it with us. Cross the channel and at night plug the Firestick into the TV. The menu comes up and we tether it to either the van WiFi or a mobile phone. The home page loads with all the apps we use at home and everything works. Option 2 I tether a tablet to either my van WiFi or a mobile phone and select the UKTV android app for all the uk channels. If i tether to a campsite WiFi abroad I can't get any UK television.

Hi Sillious,
Yes it is as simple as that isn't, get working the house then move it into MH
Phil

Lenny HB Firstly, I am a technical dunce, and need all info as if given to such.

We hope to benefit from frequent Spain/Portugal as well as northern Europe travel and you system using mobile phones and LTE booster aerials seems like the way to go. We have laptops with VPN that works very nicely and thinking of linking this into our MH system. Mobile data between the two of us will be 120Gb per month.

What bits do you use and how are they connected etc etc.

thank you

phil

It’s not really simple at all for me, I’m on EE and I can’t get the stick to tether to the phone, iPhone X 60gb and can get nada!!
Wife’s phone on EE iPhone 11 straight on???
So if we was running on mine we’d get sod all on the tv (we have back up dvds?)

I had this happen. Changed the name of my iphone and it worked.

I'm not familiar with iPhones so other than direct comparison with the settings on your wife's phone I can't help. You could Google it.
