Sorry if this is a stupid question but can you get a sat nav which is more helpful to someone traveling abroad? I’m thinking of clear instructions for accessing and exiting roundabouts, turning at junctions and lanes on motorways - just been in the right lane really!

I have driven once in America and once in Spain in a car but was bad at it and must of annoyed many locals and need all the assistance I can get with a 7 metre motorhome :whatthe::swear:

Most including my app based one (Sygic) does Europe and gives lane assist. This shows what lane you should be in for the next junction, roundabout or whilst on motorway.

I would also recommend Sygic as said above it tells and shows where you should be

My fairly basic Garmin does it too so I think it's fairly standard now. Just don't expect the road mapping to be completely accurate even if you have the most up to date maps. I'm currently on a site in Corsica at the end of a road Garmin say doesn't exist. :)

What none of them tell you how to use your indicators on roundabouts and it varies widely between different countries. Best just to see what the locals do and try and copy them. Except in Italy of course where it is very unwise to copy local driving habits. :)

iGO works as all the others do BUT you do have to make your own mind up sometimes as roads are changed and no one tells anyone what they have done. As with all SatNavs don't just blindly follow them or you could finish up stuck down a narrow lane or in a field somewhere following a Doris Special as we call it.

If you are that unsure of what you are doing perhaps you should consider a holiday in the Uk instead. Its a long way to Spain with lots of junctions and roundabouts. There are lorries, buses, cars. bikes and motorhomes all sharing the same bit of road.

Don't know of a single SatNav that will tell you exactly which lane to be in and which lane to exit in. Most of it is just common sense but watch the French drivers they like to nip through on the inside on roundabouts.

If you read the rules of the road for Spain, you can use the right lane for ANY exit. Just go all the way around the outside. The law just says that you should indicate right before you exit. It's really vague about what the other lanes are for.

I’m currently in Germany and using a new cheap Chinese sat nag. Have to say for £40 I’m well impressed- and yes it does have lane assist etc. I’ve also found the route recalculation is very quick which is a real bonus when you have ‘cocked up’ (something I have done on a few occasions so far!)

Garmin every time, although I have Sygic I cannot for the life of me get my head round it, same with Copilot. I find Garmin and route planning using Basecamp the easiest way to go.

Garmin , newer or older high end units will give you all the directional assists you need , inc with weight , height etc , sidewinds etc .

Both Tom Tom Camper & Garmin Camper will give you advance verbal and visual notification of what lane you need to be in at motorway junctions and complicated Junctions roundabouts.

Dont copy The French on roundabouts,,they have not a clue. BUSBY.

Not Satnav related but might be helpful with roundabouts on the Continent....

My garmin has decided to become deceased. Well I have had it 4 plus years. Time I changed before going on a jaunt into Europe.

Motorcycle zumo 660, had it 11 years now, update it every 3 months, performs flawlessly, used all the time, and in all weathers!!(y)

My Garmin committed suicide today. As I firmly shut the drivers door, it had just decided to detach itself from the window coinciding almost perfectly with the door closure. Shattered glass can, under other circumstances, look quite attractive.

I agree, a £38 Chinese Xgody 886 with Primo inc truck files has sent us around France Belgium Luxembourg and into Germany over the past two weeks without a hitch and very accurately plotted times even when a forced diversion caused a detour. Lane assist, signage indication, motorway stop identification, it has it all along with the ability to set your vehicle dimensions. A great buy and regular map updates from the guys at the Nozatec Facebook site make it unbeatable value.

Sod’s law, just set off on two week tour of Switzerland and Austria and the zumo goes up the spout on the first day!!
I think it was the update not loading properly but as I’m sat in Switzerland without my laptop it’ll have to wait till I get back!!
I shudda kept my mouth shut!!

I have a 2 year old Kenwood all singing dancing thingy with Garmin on we landed in Bilbao Spain put in Co-ordinates then discovered Spain was not on it, phoned Garmin told them we had updated , they said you want to update softwear, and then reupdate , I said it said when I checked the Countries (in Spain !!! too late I know ) it said Northern Europe but , it had Italy on !! which looking at the position of Italy it looks approximately on the same lines as Spain , anyhow no Computer to reset SatNav , so I bought the cheapest small Tom Tom haggled down to a 100 Euros , stuck it on the windscreen brilliant piece of kit.

It's easy, drive like a London cab driver.... No mirrors, just indicate, turn and be oblivious to the horns.
