Any travellers able to give a suitable route to travel from Fussen(Germany) into Austria via Innsbrook to the Dolomites. I need a route through Austria avoiding roads that require the Go Box. I have searched via Multimap avoiding tolls but I am unsure if the roads selected by the map are suitable for a 7.5m van at 4.5t.

Many thanks

From memory The problem with running near Innsbruck is that you’re parallel with the A12 which they could divert you on if there are any problems on the minor roads. I have a foolproof route but it is North to south, not east to west. If you can get near Innsbruck via the A roads you could use the old Brenner pass, I’m not sure if the main Brenner falls under the go box as it has a toll in its own right, perhaps someone more experienced with that part could chime in! I will have a look in a bit when I can access a decent map👍

PJGWiltshire I have done it that way without problem in a similar sized van & have posted on a number of threads the route taken. Recently I named the roads so if you have a look on threads for Austria and tolls go box route to Croatia etc you should find it. The only bit which often causes some concern is the road system actually in Innsbruck but I’ve done it both ways without a problem using Tom Tom and the street signs to confirm.

PS It’s HERE at #4

Many thanks. That gives me some base now to look at and make it work

Fern pass then the Brenna pass done it a few times just be careful you get on the right road. S road signs have a blue background and Autobahn signs a green background.

So the A roads are OK to travel on , is there a colour code for the express ways which I understand I cannot use without a go box

Sorry don't know about those.
I should have said main roads which are "S" roads. I forgot A roads are Autobahns (Motorways) you need a Go box for them. .

Could you explain which vehicles need a go box and if its all vehicles what it is and where to get one. Is it just large vans?

Also Brenner old road says restrictions so nothing over 3.5t but that relates ONLY to commercial vehicles so your safe. There is a cheap fuel station just before the border crossing rather than expensive Italy & Brenner is worth a visit.

Going south you can park on a huge parking area just outside the town, crossing over small stream to enter, then walk back. If it is market day this parking area is full with traders but you may get parked on the side of the road.

For the Dolomites I head to Bolzano then towards Lienze from there back into Austria

All vehicles over 3.5t you can get them at board posts and service stations. You will need your V5 and Certificate of Conformity.

Sorry PJGWiltshire it seems I confused you with my opening post about reaching Innsbruck via the A roads, I meant like our A roads (main roads) how stupid of me!!
Anyhow the reason I wouldn’t go near Innsbruck is because I’ve been diverted off the 171 ONTO the A12 in the past on the bike (luckily I had bought the vignette and yes they was bloody well checking them when we got back off the A12). So as Lenny HB says A roads are motorways and there’s SOME S roads (expressways) where you need the go box, but they are mainly out Vienna way. My foolproof way of traversing Austria is north to south getting off the A8 (Germany) at Bernal am Chiemsee down the 305 then into the 176 down to sankt johann then pick up the 161 to mittersill then south through the Felbertauerntunnel €11 to Lienz and as royandsharont says go into the dolomites from there, it’s a bit long way round for you though but it’s an option👍 Sorry again for the misunderstanding (blame it on being poorly😁😁)👍

That will do me. Will not be in any hurry and will be stopping hopefully frequently to take in the views. Shall now get the map out and have a look

Thanks

It has been mentioned that one may be diverted onto a motorway requiring a GO box if over 3.5t.

If one has chosen not to buy a GO box I presume they do not sell them at the start of the diversion, so what is one supposed to do?

Can you still be fined for following a forced diversion?

I believe a few on here have been fined for doing just that Geoff, barmy I know but hey ho. The story I can’t get my head round was a funster who’s go box stopped pinging at certain gantries, they ended up with a fine even though they still had a ridiculous amount of credit left on the box, I can’t believe they can fine people for instances like that🤷‍♂️ That’s why I keep away from roads running alongside motorways in Austria👍
