N00b!
What happens when you decide to make an overnight stop on the street or in a layby?
Do you get moved on by the old bill?
I guess I have concerns about drunks or nasty guys trying to nick it or damage it.

Can some of the more experienced peeps let me know their experiences please?
Horror stories welcome!!!!

:D
Thank you for your time.

When we started we did it all the time, no bother apart from traffic noise.
Then I joined this forum and read all the things that can befall you and put the wind up us.
Even used to use motorway Aires and things in France with the same result.
But it was good times, no cares.

I have had several really scary happenings in a layby overnight.. To the point I am now terrified at the thought of a long journey where I need a break... I am even considering do I wish to keep on motorhoming.

I suspect that the creeps see a lone female drive up and their weird brain cells go into overload.

You can take all the precautions in the world but these creeps don't think, or care, rationally.

If it's really stiflingly hot I have pulled all the blinds down and just left the habitation door open, sat away from direct vision reading a book with a cup of tea and looked up to see a man standing in my van between me and the door... not just once.

..... Pkusother occurences.

This makes me believe that most, not all, are sat looking innocent in their cars and actually see a woman driver who gets out to turn the gas on.

No I have never had a problem.
When on my own though I can concur with Joy as I find many proper overnight picnic areas in the UK & abroad are inundated with men seeking men.

. Just to make it clear to newbies.. I am not a man. :)

Stopped in hundreds of streets and lay-bys no problems whatsoever but did get woken up about three in the morning once by the Police In Dublin who advised me to move, when I politely enquired why they said because you won’t be able to move in the morning.....as you won’t have any wheels! I had managed to stop in a lovely empty road which came alive at night with the towns detritus all huddled around burning braziers  they very courteously gave me a blue light escort somewhere safer, what a service you gotta love the Garda.(y)

Parked a number of times on a side road in towns and cities ie Birmingham and Sheffield as a couple of examples. In Birmingham l parked outside the police station in Kings Norton and also snuggled in between some mini coaches overnight without a problem. Likewise in Sheffield l've parked in side roads in residential areas without any problems. The van itself could be passed off as a minibus at a quick glance so that may help.
Just be sensible, don't block driveways and keep quiet 🤫.

I only stopped overnight in a layby once. I was tired and desperate for a sleep. It wasnt a good layby as it was right on a busy road. Noisy but otherwise ok.
The better type of off the road laybys do get used by various professions for their business, so solo travellers could be misidentified as looking for, or supplying.

I believe it was Vic Barclaybasher that pulled up in a layby. Was sat in the drivers seat when a man wanders over and slides his hand up the leg of Vic's shorts. Great if you are in to such things of course

Ye gads. Nice if you like that sort of thing, but as a Jiu Jitsu guy, that creepy hand would have little use for anything fo a long time after that! :D

I steer clear of Brighton, and only wear slip-on shoes if I have to venture there

Are you meaning somewhere just off the main roads where you can stop for a quick nap or somewhere to park up for a few days?

I find industrial estates are quite good, everyone goes home about 5 and it's reasonably quiet after that. In Spain I looked for a lot of the housing developments that were ongoing, all the infrastructure was there - roads, drainage even recycling bins in some bits and at night it was quiet after the workers had went home.

Spent over twenty years on or off parking in laybys and the like... no trouble ever!

JJ

Only once may be... if you remember?... Along that motorway in France. You had to reverse to get in . It was dark already . We even disturbed a doe. And for some inexplicable reason, we didn't feel completly safe or at ease. You put that stick across the door. Lovely and peaceful night though...
