30 years of weekends away motor racing.
Has anybody on here had factory similar aircon fitted to a late shape Mercedes Sprinter (2012 ) ??? Or would i be better to fit a roof mounted Aircon unit ??
Sadly this is the only downside to my lovely racevan...no aircon !
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Are you saying that you don't have dash aircon ?
If you don't then roof aircon isn't going to sort your problem unless you have a gennie you can run as you drive.

It can be done eberspacher do one but it’s not easy and will be easily around £2500. I have fitted roof and under bench with inverters for on the move but they are just sub standard compared to engine driven. The only upside is for night time use. It’s not straight forward DIY fit either and can require some fabricating of mounts.

Dometic (at least I think its Dometic that makes it) do a roof mounted air con that works on site mains or 12v as you drive.

Try asking @eddievanbitz about air con, there are plenty out there that aren't very good.

No I do not have dash aircon, would roof mounted aircon not run of the leisure batteries ?

Dometic Freshjet can be operated thru 12v on the move but they need 1200w on 230v so 12v load would be substantial , someone maybe able to specify how that works out !
Also thats only for a 8000btu suit say 6/7 mtr van

1200W on 230v = 1200W on 12v plus a reserve for start-up plus an allowance for losses. That would be in excess of a 100A draw on the batteries.

We had a Dometic Freshlight ( i think it was called) on our Autotrail.

It was rubbish. It was so bad we paid to have Dometic to check it out and they said it was the best it could do.

Not enough evaporators apparantly.

Not being a air con engineer i just thought it was crap.

Yes we had one too & I honestly thought it was broken, it was better at heating than cooling.

If you have a good size alternator (sprinters usually do (as high as 280a)).

Go for a roof mounted. Best of both worlds.

I have retrofitted cab a/c to a sprinter myself. Huge massive job with entire dash and steering having to come out if you use certain kits

Depending on what size alternator he has, he can run an roof mounted or ducted unit on the move.

Minimum alternator size for a small unit is around 120amp. However, many Sprinters are factory standard with higher amp output. One of ours had a 240amp alternator.

Just needs running through a pure sine wave inverter.

There are 12v units but I know little about them.

If I was looking at this, I would go down the habitation A/C, then you have the best of both worlds. Though it will not cool the cab as well as chassis A/C.

For The Sprinter you will need a retro kit.

The Evaporator is probably the easiest part. You will need a compressor, new bigger belt, condenser, expansion valve, drier, Lots of piping and switches for the interior.
